The Assembly is the supreme legislative body of the South Pacific. Its members, called legislators, make laws for the region, exercise oversight over the regional government, and discuss matters of regional interest.
-
Propose new laws and amendments to existing laws
-
Vote on proposals to pass new laws or amend existing laws
-
Elect the Chair of the Assembly
-
Confirm the appointment of ministers, judges, and security councillors
-
Question government officials
-
Discuss matters of regional interest
The Assembly is not a rubber stamp. It is a forum for lawmaking, discussion, and oversight, and legislators play a key role in ensuring that the government remains accountable to the community.
To be granted and to retain legislator status, the following conditions apply:
To Become a Legislator
-
Be a citizen of the South Pacific
-
Seek status in good faith, as judged by the Chair of the Assembly
To Remain a Legislator
-
Remain a citizen of the South Pacific
-
Participate in more than two thirds of votes held during a given month, or one half when only two votes were held (except if granted a leave of absence)
The Chair checks legislator status during the first week of each month and removes any legislators who fail the requirements, though leniency can be given to those who failed the voting requirement if the are new or generally compliant.
