It was an average day. As average as can be when you’re a wormhole away from being on the frontline of a warzone. That’s atleast what Mako Nelsia thought as she idly sat in her office. She peered around, looking at how the system had progressed under her CO’s command. From the mines being removed to the new station being added, it all looked amazing.

. . .

That was, until the Action Stations alarm went off. She grabbed her service revolver and ran for the G/HQ’s Action Information Center.

“Status. Status!”

“Multiple Contacts! Five ships, one’s signature is around a klick and half, the other’s are less than half a klick!”

“Get me eyes and ears damn it! COMMO!”

“Aye Ma’am!”

“Open up the multi specs, initiate first contact. It’s probably not Galactyan, Emerald hasn’t been here in years, Akroppi Vessels are really large. It ain’t Envari or Colonus, they’d pop up on our IFF. That…”

She trailed off

“That means they’re probably Calerost…”

“Be very careful how you talk to the elves. I don’t feel like starting a war because my COMMO decided to shit talk SPACE ELVES.”

“Roger, ma’am.”

The COMMO starts inputting communication data and begins speaking.

“ALCON. ALCON. Unknown Vessels, you are trespassing in Directorate Space. Please Identify yourselves. Anybody Copy this request?”

At the end of the mess that was the wormhole war calerost gave the rosecordi a mirial communications device, to hopefully stay in contact with them and aid during the war. That device was never activated, and calerost mostly forgot about it, untill now. From the knowledge of the resocordi they had from Galactya calerost knew their affinity for stealing technology. Sure the communicator was made so that it was insanely hard to reverse engineer it and would destroy itself if a attempt was made but could that be trusted? Probably not. They ware going to go get it back, and at the same time establish diplomatic relations

The mission fleet was made up from 6 ships: a Flood-class battleship called the INS Storm of Fire escorted by 4 droplet-class corvettes and a dedicated minesweeper craft to probe the wormhole. The fleet was commanded by captain Raithon, the usual command officer of the Storm of Fire.

The minesweeper went in first, and after reporting that it was clear, the whole fleet entered the wormhole, finding itself on the other side of the sector

The at this point well known whistle echoed on all frequencies, destroying any rosecordi doubts on who just entered their territory

“The Gil-atarnië asserts it’s presence. This is captain Raithon Gilraedar of the imperial calerostan navy, commanding the INS Storm of Fire, with 4 corvettes escorting me. We come here by the order of the imperial estate and naval high command to re establish diplomatic relations and retrieve the unactivated mirial communication device given to Fleet Commander Tristie Claire to establish a permanent communication chanel between our states, which she didn’t do. We are not authorized to hostile action if not provoked, and are awaiting your response and a diplomat to negotiate with.”

“Mako?”

“COMMO?”

“They want… FLTCMDR Claire?”

“Her? Why?”

“She has a… “Mirial communication device.” Or something.”

“So not only does she have to be friends with the most prominent senators of all time, she took a comms device from a foreign power. Amazing. Why didn’t I do that?”

“I’m gonna make a multispect, tell them to wait.”

“Calerostan Vessels hold position while we verify with our chain of command and procedures.”

“Hello. Fleet Commander Tristie Claire, Rosepoint Naval College. How can I help you?”

“Hello, ma’am. I’m Command Master Chief Petty Officer Mako Nelsia, ABH-003, Atlia Reach. Do you have a Calerostan Communication device?”

“I… Did. Was tutoring a student. Engineering Major, he asked to borrow it, told him not to take it apart. I dunno know what happened to it. Why?”

“Amazing. Do you mind taking a break from your duties in RPNC and coming down to ABH-003. We got a Calerostan delegation who would love for you to explain this to them.”

“Oh. Yeah. I’ll clear up my schedule.”

“Thanks. I’ll let them know you’re coming. Over and out.”

“Over and out.”

Nelsia reentered the Combat Information Center.

“COMMO, mic.”

“Aye. Link to Multispect, persume?”

“Yup, Open Mic.”

“All linked up. Clear to speak.”

“This is Command Master Chief Petty Officer Mako Nelsia, representing the sector of Atlia Reach of The Scientific Directorate of Rosecordia to All Concerned. Docking rights granted, push bearing Two Three Five, Angels Four. You will be escorted by four element Littoral of ABH-003’s System’s Defense Force. You will be patted down upon exiting, bringing weapons or threatening the safety of the personnel of this Station will result in de facto detainment, impoundment of ships, and other penalties. Diplomats will be waiting. Advised oxygen masks, Serniani Oxygen levels are low. Appreciation in advance.”

OOC

OOC: Angels means Altitude, in this case being to the Black Hole’s Plane, with positives being higher and negatives being lower. Saying Four Element Littoral means two things

You have eight escorts, Elements are two, 2 x 4 = 8

Littoral refers to Littoral Naval Vessel

“Copy. I remind you that any attempt at detainment of calerostan personnel will be considered a hostile action. A shuttle carrying a delegation will be dispatched shortly.”

And so it was. In a few minutes the shuttle docked with the Rosecordi station.

As per calerostan tradition Raithon as the highest ranking military officer in the squadron lead the delegation. He was followed by two more officers and two security personnel who remained unarmed as per rosecordi request. All 4 though did have personal shields, and the guns of the ships never locked off the station since leaving the wormhole. A attempt at hostile action would go badly for their hosts.

The delegation left the shuttle.

“The light of the stars shines on the day of our meeting.”

OOC

“The light of the stars shines on the day of our meeting” is a common calerostan formal greeting. Calerostan personal shields can be compared to those of Dune, they can’t be seen untill they’re hit by something. The continued force of a strike is what drains the shield, making something like a bullet not very effective against it, but mele strikes able to do damage to it. Energy weapons are also effective against them.

“The Directorate and Atlia Reach extend the warmest of regards to you as well. Welcome aboard. If you would follow me, there’s much to discuss… I’ll be your contact with the sector government and the Directorate Government. Firstly…”

Nelsia presents a K9 Officer Revolver.

“Glass Etched, what we dug up on Twenty Three Alfa. Terrible world, terrible fate. But, it’s yours now.”

Nelsia hands the revolver to Raithon

“Now, we must get moving, if we stick around in the hangar that LSO will kill me for safety code violations.”

Raithon inspects the revolver he was handed

“A chemical kinetic gun, if i remember correctly this type of design is terran in origin, no? Was it called a revolver or something like that? I have quite a collection of foreign weapons, it’s a hobby of mine. The addition of the glass of a killed world makes this one quite special. Thank you for the gift. I have one for you as well as one for Fleet Commander Claire, but I’ll hand those over when we meet her too. Let’s get moving”

After a short walk they meet the Tristie in the hallway

“May the stars shine on the day of our meeting, Fleet Commander Claire. It is a honor to meet you too. I am captain Raithon Gilraedar. With me are lady Estrien who represents the ministry of research and technology and commander Aphadion, my left hand man, as well as two unarmed bodyguards. Before we start anything, may i present a gift to you and CMCPO Nelsia. Aphadion, please hand me the box.”

He is handed a large ornate box crafted from a black wood with silver detailing. He opens it, revealing two ceremonial daggers.

OOC

While gifting someone a sword in calerostan culture is a sign of alliance, a dagger or some other form of knife just represents friendship and respect.

Raithon looked at her for a second. She was familiar. He had seen her somewhere before. And then it clicked.

“I think we have already met miss Loom. And i think it was at Taivaallinen, more precisely on admiral Tangadon’s table. I was just first officer then, and you a pilot, and you and your friend did cause a lot of drama, didn’t you?
But that’s not important now, is it? Let’s get to the point. During the closing stages of the wormhole war Calerost had given the rosecordian state, more precisely Tristie Claire, a mirial communication device to keep contact between it and calerost. That device has never been activated nor used, and now, we want it back.”

Laurisa gulped. Yeah, she knew that taking this was probably not the best idea, but she was stable. Stable as could be in the current situation, but her face dropped faster than she could draw a gun

“It’s… It’s Mrs, now. Calio and I got married three years ago. At the time, we thought it was weird Ty would leave himself behind, but after getting hit with a literal Relativistic Weapon in Advantia, and being shuffled around a couple of prisons, did we learn what he told you all.”

An awkward silence takes hold over the group as Laurisa finished speaking.

“Switching gears, you’ll find a distinct lack of mirial communication device on my person. I’m a teacher, as well as a Fleet Commander. I tutored a kid, who saw it, curiously asked about it, and wanted to take a peak at it. This was three weeks ago. I have but a clue as to where it’s at… Probably the physics lab. Labcoats doing labcoat things. Told him not to take it apart if I needed it so it’s in one piece, mayhaps. I’ll figure out shipping it back when I get it back, but right now I’m a bit far from Rosepoint Naval College.”

“Why couldn’t you bring the communicator with you?”

“I’m strong, but not ‘pry technology out of a labcoat’ strong.”

“Typical Rosepoint teacher moment.”

“What’s that supposed to me?”

“Nothing, Well, with the whole communicator, it’s… Complicated? Do you guys want to discuss anything else while you have us here? Taivaallinen? Relations farside?”

The captain was angry for such “disrespect” as he saw it, of calerostan technology and as father to a collage aged son himself afraid for the student.

“FLTCMDR Claire the communicator was given to the ROSECORDI STATE, to maintain communication with Calerost. You ware in no position to just give it away to a random student! Tangadon specifically warned you that any attempt at disassembling it or tinkering with it will cause it to fry itself by detonating it’s mirion reactor! And if he removed a panel when that happens it could be… Nasty, to say the least. Especially since you do not have the technology to deal with wounds caused by mirions. They have a tendency to… crystalize organic matter. Even after more than a thousand years we still don’t know how that works. It’s borderline unexplainable. But we found ways to treat wounds like that, it’s just necrosis and cancer combined, for the lack of a better term. Back to the point. You had no right to give that communication device away and we will not leave Rosecordia untill it is returned. But yes, we can discuss other topics while we wait for the communication device to be returned. The other half of my mission is to establish permanent diplomatic relations, after all.”

“I told them not to take it apart, they’ll probably just Neutrino Scan it, X-Ray it, figure out what’s inside it, be interested, go ‘Oh hey, how interesting.’ Then they give it back to me. Happens to most of the stuff in my office. Alot.”

Laurisa fidgets

“So… To overtly simplify the secession crisis for you, Rosecordia performed a mass decapitation strike on senior Federation officials aprox hours after the secession crisis kicked off. The war lasted a few years, last pockets of resistance going two years ago. Essentially, we’ve been running the state perfectly fine since then. So, since then, we’ve expanded into BrightSpace, we’ve made friends with a few powers, and talked to a couple of others. Also, we found… Hmph.”

Laurisa stands up

“Would be easier to show you the Nexus, rather than explain it?”

“Yeah. Alot.”

“We could even retrieve the communicator if you want to go to Rosepoint. That’s how I got here, actually.”

“I’ve gotta stay 'til the CO leaves the infirmary. You’ll be fine taking HST by yourselves?”

“It’s a dimension of pure data, we don’t know how it works, and that’s classified. Like. Heavily. I know the jist of the situation, I was there, but the report’l differ from what actually happened. As per usual.”

“How classified?”

“Enough for us not to know.”

“This world roughly corresponds to realspace, we know it exists outside of it, and it’s walkable, but flat. The world seems to accept multiple forms of gas, you can speak languages of most kind, and it’s translated near instantly. Finally, there is no life, besides us here, as far as we know, and are aware.”

“The world is… Near and dear to most around here. Some people live permanently, others use it to travel, and some of us… Are stuck here permanently.”

Kelsie points at herself

“Almost. In… Theory, anyways. We can discuss more on the HST system. I’ve got nowhere else to be besides Volissia, and I’m trying to avoid responsibility right now. Being the eldest Rift Walker has its perks… And detriments.”

“Surprisingly, nobody else is on this HST. So, I suppose now would be the time to answer while we have the three hours of transit out to Rosepoint. So, anything else you want to ask our dear friend Kelsie?”

The information he already received only peaked the captain’s curiosity. The fact that it was heavily classified was a part, but he was more curious about the nature of rift walkers, what they ware capable of.

“You told me that you’re stuck in here. How so? What would happen if you tried to exit?”

“Oh, I can leave. Theoretically, with a Datastar.”

Kelsie pulls out a grenade looking object

“If I were to pull this pin, and throw it into a Realspace Access Point, I could keep myself tethered to the Nexus, for about a third of a day, twelve hours. If I didn’t have this, I’d die. I’d slowly, painfully, defragment into nothing in the span of thirty minutes, and disperse my consciousness into a puddle of nothing. That’s what happened to the first person who did it. Her name’s struck from the record. Never existed technically.”

“So, now we map the Nexus, acquire data from foreign powers, and generally serve as a special response force for whenever someone trespasses our space and doesn’t respond to pings.”

A voice calls out throughout the shuttle
