The name A1-0, a possible naming convention and its implications

Sounds good.

If we go for alternative 1 - enlarge plots to fit the sector horizontally - the plot surface areas (and thereby maximum numbers of stars) increase by a factor of about 1.4.

Does alternative 1 refer to this?

Yes, the image to the left. Alternative 2 is the image to the right.

Mhhh, I don’t really know about this. On one hand, increasing the plot surface areas would make sense, but on the other, maybe we don’t want to change things too much from how they are now. Also, going for alternative two would give us plenty of space for additional future plots.

What do you think we should do Qwert?

Go alternative 2 I say. up the ante. Embrace great Sector rework.

I prefer alternative 1 because it’s easier to modify the map that way, and I think it’s nice to have some plots partly inside other sectors. Makes it feel more “alive”. Increasing the height to 1000 ly and adopting 0.004 as the new stellar density and 1.6 planets per star changes the number of stars a lot more than the 1.4 times increase in plot surface area.

Though I think we should vote on which alternative we should move forward with and if we should increase the height of the sector to 1000 ly.

Yeah, I feel like option 1 is the best. Increasing surface area + height + star density. Let’s just go all out lol :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, we should definitely do a vote. I sure do hope the rework passes though , the Sector needed a new wave of change :3

Perhaps we should do an activity check/purge before vote though, to see if there’s need for many new plots in the foreseeable future.

@Galaxiel I’ve requested the creation of a map manger role on the server. Not sure if you’ve seen it. I have been meaning to discuss this with all map managers.

Yeah, definitely. Also, even though we don’t really have permanent nations, there are some that we definitely need to keep even though they haven’t been active in a long time. Like the DCI, or the Akropii, and even Ferristia. They’re a bit too engrained in current lore and events to be removed from the map.

Also, thanks for asking about the map manager roles. I appreciate it a lot ^^

The nations I would currently remove are the United Coalition, Astra & Pheonixa, Slavvyonia and the BSSJ.

@Qwert sounds good?

Ferristia?

Let’s hold off the purge discussion for another time and place.

Yeah, sorry.

Anyways, I think we have everything covered here! Took a while, but I’m happy with the result. I’ll leave you the honor of making the summarization post, as well as the voting, Qwert :3

I think it’s time to decide to whether to move forward with these reforms or not through a vote. Here’s what’s on the table.

  • A convention that divides most of the Galaxy into equal-sized circle segment-shaped sectors and an explanation of the name A1-0 itself (see further details in above posts)
  • A well-defined location of A1-0 in the galaxy and coreward and spinward directions
  • Due to the proposed naming system, A1-0 gets an increase in surface area from 3,400x3,400 ly² to roughly 4,400x3,400 ly² (coreward and rimward boundaries are circular) and an increase in height from 100 ly to 1,000 ly so that most of the galactic disc is covered
  • Furthermore, the stellar density is increased to 0.004 stars per ly³ to match the real-life Sun’s stellar neighbourhood (previous number roughly 0.0009)
  • The increased size of the sector means that the volume of A1-0 is roughly 13.7 times larger than before
  • The increased size and stellar density of the sector mean that there is roughly 63.5 million stars in A1-0 which is 58.8 times as many as before
  • I have proposed two ways of transferring the map plots to an updated map of A1-0:
    • Rescale the plots so that they cover the whole sector horizontally (left-hand image in this post) - this means almost a 1.3 times increase in plot size and that some plots end up partially in Sector A1-1. The plots will contain a larger share of the total amount of stars
    • No rescaling of plots (right-hand image in this post) - lots of more space rimward for new plots and all plots remain in Sector A1-0
  • Furthermore, the amount of planets per star will increase from 1 to 1.6
  • Regardless of the increase in amount of stars and planets, the following limitations will remain:
    • 6,300 planets/plot that might support life
    • 50 planets/plot with intelligent communicative life that has developed independently
Shall we implement these updates to the map of Sector A1-0?
  • Yes
  • No

If we implement these changes to the map, should we rescale the plots or add more plots?
  • Rescale
  • Add more plots

@Qwert since you never specified, what’s counted as a winning percent here?

More than half of votes cast

Hey @Qwert !

Whenever you have the time, would you be able to give us a list of all the resized plot areas? I don’t have inkscape to find them out properly so I can only make educated guesses.
