Zuhlgan Delays National Direction Conference as Record Heatwave Threatens Ozákla
Ozákla, Zuhlgan— The Holy Dominion has announced an unprecedented delay of its annual National Direction Conference, citing an extreme heatwave expected to grip the capital and surrounding regions beginning next week. The weeklong summit, originally scheduled to open Monday, April 20, has been postponed indefinitely, according to a brief statement released this morning by the Office of the Divine Committee.
“Due to severe weather projections and out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of conference delegates, support staff, and security personnel, the National Direction Conference will be rescheduled,” the statement read. “A new date will be announced once meteorological conditions stabilize.”
The decision marks the first time in over two centuries that the conference— one of Zuhlgan’s most significant annual political events— has been delayed for any reason. The gathering traditionally brings together the Arkava, the thirteen Autarks, senior clergy, military strategists, and corporate delegates to set national priorities behind closed doors at the historic Zuktal Synodic Monastery.
The Zuhlgani Meteorological and Environmental Observation Service (MEOS) issued its highest-level heat alert late yesterday, forecasting temperatures to reach up to 48°C (118°F) in Ozákla by midweek, with overnight lows expected to remain above 30°C (86°F). The service warned that the heatwave could persist for ten to fourteen days, driven by a stationary high-pressure system over the Cordilian interior.
“The combination of extreme temperatures, high humidity from the surrounding seas, and the urban heat island effect in Ozákla creates a dangerous environment, particularly for older adults and those with underlying health conditions,” the service’s statement read. “We advise all residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces where available.”
The Zuktal Synodic Monastery, while historically significant, is not fully equipped with modern climate control systems. The stone structure retains heat well into the night, and retrofitting the facility with adequate cooling would be impossible before the conference’s scheduled start date.
The delay presents both logistical headaches and political complications for the Divine Committee. Hundreds of delegates, support staff, and security personnel had already begun arriving in Ozákla, with accommodations booked and schedules finalized. The government has not yet announced whether attendees will be asked to return home or remain in the capital under contingency arrangements.
Politically, the postponement comes at a sensitive moment. Tensions with Krauanagaz remain high following President Renkara’s hot mic comments earlier this year, and backchannel negotiations aimed at preserving the 2025 ceasefire are reportedly ongoing. The conference was expected to produce key decisions on Zuhlgan’s response to those comments, as well as on military posture in Mitallduk, the naval build-up in the Gulf of Good Omen, governance reforms, and the proposed “Digital Piety” surveillance initiative.
“The timing could not be worse,” said Dr. Nael Korveth of the Cordilian Institute for Strategic Studies. “Zuhlgan’s leadership needs to project unity and resolve. Instead, they are scrambling to reschedule their most important policy forum because of the weather. It is not a devastating blow, but it is an embarrassment— and an opportunity for their rivals.”
The Krauanagazan State Department has not issued an official response to the delay. However, unofficial sources in Yayyára described the postponement as “an interesting development” that could provide a temporary cooling-off period following the renewed operations in Mitallduk.
The World Forum’s regional envoy, who had been expected to observe portions of the conference, has not commented. Okhoan and Visrodin delegates, already in Ozákla for the now-delayed summit, are reportedly reviewing their travel plans.
The TPA-PV government in Mitallduk, which maintains close ties with Zuhlgan, expressed “understanding and solidarity” with the Dominion’s decision, adding that “the safety of conference participants must come first.”
Officials have not provided a timeline for when a new conference date might be announced, though sources suggest late May or early June are under consideration, provided the heatwave abates and no further extreme weather events intervene.
For now, the Zuktal Synodic Monastery sits silent, its fortified halls empty, as Ozákla braces for a week of dangerous heat— and Zuhlgan’s leadership waits for the mercury to fall.
