PARLIAMENT DEBATE ERIAN ENTRANCE TO CMEC
10th of August, 2023

Parliament is currently debating Eria’s entrance as a member into the Cross Mediterranean Economic Community (CMEC). The proposal has been brought forward by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Maria Ginevra, to help with the economic stagnation that Eria is currently experiencing. “The entrance of Eria into the CMEC would help to eliminate barriers for trade and capital exchange between Eria and other CMEC countries,” cited the Minister in her Press briefing after the first session of the debate. The motion however was fiercely opposed by around half of the members of the Conservative Party, especially from the ‘Old Guard’ group, led by the President pro Tempore of the Chamber, Luigi Dante, who gave a long speech about the danger of neoliberal economic development and of foreign economic interference.

Membership within CMEC has been in an ‘on-off’ situation, linked to the economic ups and downs of Eria. Within the parliament, debates on CMEC membership has been brought forward for seven times in the past administrations. The last vote that the parliament did on Eria’s membership was defeated by only three votes. The Conservative Party has been defiant against Eria’s CMEC membership. However, this opinion is no longer mainstream within the party as newer and younger MPs began to side with membership, and only the ‘Old Guard’ MPs that still oppose membership.

CONSERVATIVE VICTORY, ERIA WILL NOT ENTER CMEC
30th of August, 2023

Parliament struck down the motion to join CMEC today in a very narrow margin. The motion, which was brought forward by the Rationalist Democratic Party (PDR) and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, was supposed to help with Eria’s stagnating economy and sluggish development due to existing trade barriers with states in the Mediterranean. However, the Conservative Party, and more than half of deputies from the Centrist Coalition (the so-called ‘Old Guard’ deputies) opposed the motion, finding it threatening to domestic manufacturers and Eria’s cultural heritage.

Leader of the Opposition and Liberal Party deputy, Giovanni Arrighi, accused the Old Guard deputies as ‘sabotaging Eria’s future’, and condemned the Conservative Party for opposing development and transformation. Many Liberal deputies also accuse the Royal Family of interfering within the process. Conservative deputy Alessandro Luca proposed that the government should negotiate directly with countries with proposals that would benefit Eria and would do less harm than joining CMEC.

Prime Minister Francesco refused to gave comments on the developing situation, and rebuked questions regarding a split within PDR. Deputy PM Valentina Rosa stated that the PDR is ‘a big tent party’, and splits like this is to be expected. Minister of Economy and Finance, Maria Ginevra, stated that the result were ‘disappointing’, and that Eria would have to find other more difficult ways to encourage foreign investments and trade. “The Prime Minister has instructed me to find more trade partners and find solution to encourage foreign investments. We will come up with several proposals that would benefit Eria as a whole,” stated the Minister in a press briefing this afternoon.
