The border region between the Union of the Seraphim Veil and the Star Empire of Calerost had always been lax. Although there remained no official contact between governments, and the Sundering prevented Calerostan settlements from forming in the voidsea, there was always an unofficial trade between them, through supplies, maps, and luxuries. When the Miraline began taking over and slaughtering border settlements, the Union doubled their standing patrols and enacted Case Plan Scarlet (potential core-counterspin invasion). The task forces that patrolled the border were given phonetic names in the rush to deploy them to the field. New stations sat in deep space, while RC-18 ‘Nymph’ Early Warning & Control Spacecraft flew signals intelligence missions close to the border to gleam any information from inside the potential threat.

Emiko Susura and Asana Mardoa sit in the Commander’s Office, talking over a briefing that they were going to bring to the fleet’s crew.

“It’s a worrisome situation.”

“Considering we’re using phonetic names.. Mothball Alley’s become legitimately worried.”

“They’ve brought a regional command’s worth of RC-18s, really want to find something out here.”

“Do you really think they’re genociding their own species like that forwarded report says?”

“I don’t know if that’s correct, I mean-”

“General Quarters, General Quarters! This is the TAO, This is the TAO. Now launch the Alert 15 and go to battle stations for anti-spacecraft and anti-warship combat! Repeat, General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands man your battle stations immediately! Contact off Reference Point Query. General Quarters, General Quarters!”

“They’re moving towards our border. They have no IFF or transponder codes.”

“Open a multispec with them, maybe they can give us some information on what’s going on.”

“Get a priority bounce to regional headquarters, ask for assistance, there’s no way we can process all of them.”

“Line is ready aye aye ma’am.”

“Unknown ships, you are approaching the border of the Union of the Seraphim Veil, identify yourselves and state your purpose, you are entering a free fire zone. Failure to comply with specific instructions and commands as provided will result in being disabled and you will be boarded.”

The miraline war was like nothing ever seen before in calerostan history. It’s brutality surpassed the trench and chemical warfare of the first continental war by light years. It was a war of extermination.

In the first year of the war, before stable fronts ware established, calerost was losing billions of people by the day. Many wanted to escape that horror, so they did. In the latter part of the first year of the war a large escape convoy was organized. It aimed to get to the seraphim veil. It was the only other place they knew had civilization, and hence was the logical choice.
The convoy was lead by captain Nordir of trans calerostan logistics, a semi nationalized shipping company. All military officers, even retired, ware called to serve, so a civilian captain was the only option.

The convoy managed to cross calerostan territory with surprising ease. Not a single engagement with the miraline took place. The priests in the convoy declared it devine intervention. A guardian angel followed them on their travel, stopping any miraline ship that wanted to engage.

Approaching the border and hearing the message, Nordir opened a voice chanel

“Union of the seraphim veil, this is captain Nordir. I am leading a refugee convoy from the star empire of calerost. The empire is consumed by a brutal war, the casualties are massive and growing further every day. We come here seeking asylum, wanting to just protect our lives and the lives of our children.”

The vessel staff of Spirit of Action met outside CIC. Lieutenants of their respective stations, the ship’s intelligence Warrant Officer, all crowded into the hallways surrounding CIC.

“We can’t not help these people!”

“And what if they’re liars?! What if they turn around and put a bolt through our backs when we aren’t looking!”

“You would condemn a billion lives to death because of an IF.”

“My daughter has traded with them before. If they’re truly in this desperate situation like they say they are, they won’t turn their weapons on us. It doesn’t make sense.”

“You will kill us all in a pitched battle.”

“I joined the Fleet Arm for Action, not to sit on my ass. If you do nothing Commander, I will declare Navire dans des.”

“Sophia, is there anything in the system about them embroiled in a war? Genocide? Anything? We’ve all heard rumors, speculation, what’s Naval Intelligence saying?”

“..Yeah. It just came through yesterday. It was supposed to be disseminated through the patrol forces.”

A petty officer in CIC rushes into meeting space, nearly dragging the Master-at-arms with her.

“I just got a communication off Coroner Squadron. There’s a potential hostile force heading our way. Make up your fucking minds!”

“Look guys, kids right. Hurry the fuck up. Now get back to your station.”

Through the squabble, the staff puts it to a vote.

There ware no dedicated war ships in the fleet. Following the convoy would be considered deserting, which was seen as highly dishonorable. But that didn’t mean that none of the ships ware armed. Civilian ships often carried armaments to protect against pirates in remote areas of the star empire. Now, the ones more heavily armed and in a twist of fate pirate ships would stay behind with the defense fleet, to fight and die for their comrades.

The Miraline fleet was fast approaching. If they had access to mirial space the convoy would have been long gone, but a never before seen mirial storm was blocking their way. As the 5 thousand miraline ships approached, accelerating at unimaginably high g forces, they released their first attack: a massive swarm of torpedoes. Standard miraline tactics, the front ships emptied half of their magazines in a cloud of death, launching 17k torpedoes. These tactics would trough the war make calerost crate one of if not the best point defense systems in the sistem, but that was years away, and they and their Seraphim veil protectors had to survive the swarm now.

While Point Defense wasn’t the strongest against missiles, –Union doctrine dictated spacecraft were a bigger threat– it did mean that Union PD had longer reach, through long range flak batteries, sand-shot coilguns, and missile racks. Augmented with jammers, decoys, chaff, and flares, the combined countermeasures barely brought down the barrage down, only a dozen squeaked through, completely destroying the Spirit of Wisdom while also tagging a frigate, destroyer, and a few of the pressed civilian ships.

Unable to stand toe to toe with the Miraline fleet, the Union fleet made flank speed to draw the attackers deeper into Seraphim space.

“…you collected the convoy?”

“We made the linkup. I’ve mobilzed most of my SDF to bring them back.”

“How many ships are in your SDF?”

“About two thousand ships, I got a total of around 200 Resolutes, Righteouses, Responsibilities, and I got two Justice Dreadnoughts.”

“Divert your heavy assets. I’m being screamed at by Susura that she’s actively dying over there. You’re closer. You’ll be able to slam into their flank.”

“I like it. Let me call up Mytoma, see if she can send more vessels out. Conoro out.”

“Mytoma?”

“Gabriela Mytoma. Nepo. She won’t show to battle. She’s from a wealthy family. She’s their key into politics.”

“Can’t you order her?”

“She would cut the line and claim her antenna broke.”

Sloan sighs

“Carol, bring us to battlestations, prepare for anti-warship and anti-spacecraft combat. Tell FDCs across Samsara to prepare their bombers, and corresponding patrol segments. I want coverage on flanks, and divert the nearest patrol forces to cover the retreat paths.”

“Yes ma’am. On it, ma’am.”

In Calerost the miraline’s tactics ware often compared to hungry animals. And that was a very accurate description. They ware reckless and short sighted, especially at the start od the war. Very few edhels they converted ware military officers, and even less of them senior. Calerost’s cult of honor helped there as many high ranking officers would prefer to take their own lives rather than being captured and converted by the miraline. But at this part of the war the miraline’s mysteriously advanced technology, intrinsic knowledge of mirial space and superior biology gave them a advantage against Calerost. By the War in heaven the playing field would be leveled and the miraline would develop proper battle tactics, but that was years away.

The miraline fleet gave chase to the escaping seraphim ships, continuing to hold fire on them. Outmaneuvering the miraline was borderline impossible. They could take many G forces more than most species, leading to them pulling maneuvers that would kill ships. One day calerost’s anwser to this would be some of the most advanced combat ai in the sector, capable of chasing and taking out miraline ships even if the crew got knocked out or killed by Gs.

As the reinforcement fleet came in range of their radars the miraline broke chase and took formation, prepared to repeat the same torpedo attack on it, but with a larger volley. The overture finished and proper battle has officially begun.

The ‘Vampire!’ call came out over the radio, as torpedoes in their hundred thousands streamed like spiders towards Battlegroup Samsara. Again, the reach of Union PD proved it’s worth, but this time, through sheer volume alone, interception and softkill simply was unable to do its job. A good third of the ships went out of action as soon as they broke silverspace.

Meanwhile, the Edhel refugee ships entered Isabella’s Watch Port & Skyards, while different systems rallied their SDFs to protect from what was an expected assault. The heavier ships and their escorts eventually departed to join the fight.

Celestial based bombers of the Isabella’s Watch SDF exited the heliopause, a hundred formations of a hundred, streamed towards predesignated launch sites. While they couldn’t match the lethality or mass of Miraline torpedoes, they had them beat in the range department. Each carried twenty-five of the new Wayfarer AShM. They were coordinating with Samsara’s nearly six thousand Bombers and Fighters to set up a “Time on Target” attack. The Wayfarers were set to precisely arrive in the battlespace as soon as Samsara’s Bomber Wings launched their own strikes, overwhelming PD by being in the right place at the right time. To add fuel to this flame, multiple guided missile cruisers and destroyers dumped their own missiles stocks into the strike.

Death. Death was the only way to describe what happened. 225 thousand missiles was the size of the barrage that hit the miraline fleet. 50 for each ship. More than half of the miraline fleet was reduced to rubble, half of what remained was disabled, and half of what remained after that heavily damaged. Only a small amount of ships that ware lucky enough to be in the center of the formation ware still functionally operable.

The strike seemingly killed the entire high command of the fleet though, so the survivors ware unorganized, flying around like decapitated flies. Easy picking for the Veil’s fleet. Even though the refugees ware already deep in seraphim territory, now they could breathe easier, knowing that they’re fully safe. The miraline won’t be stupid enough to send another fleet, they already had enough war to fight.

And then a radio signal appeared. One capital ship survived and was desperately trying to organize the remaining fleet to no avail. It’s engines and weapons ware damaged but the hull remained pressurized. This opened a opportunity for the Veil to get some answers.

Shipborne weaponry finished their fire missions and fell silent. The battlefield was awash with broken hull and stricken parts. Ships of Battlegroup Samsara pushed through this relative lull and began issuing coup de grace strikes against the crippled warships, three torpedoes, one at the stern, one at amidships, and one at the bow.

Several of the larger intact ships were brought under tow to black sites, where they would be boarded, commandeered, and studied. Scientists would be tasked with understanding their assailants, and a few would reach out to their comrades in the Compact. The ships who were completely destroyed and had become scrap metal would be collected, samples of which would form the basis for new research into metallurgy and other scientific studies.

Meanwhile, a temporary encampment of Edhel made their homes inside a storage complex, made from storage containers and leftovers, whatever could be scavenged from local shelters and other structures.

I’ve lost most of my family in the day of many tears, thankfully me and my wife and kids ware off world, visiting a friend in Celebar. I was going to be drafted but was deemed physically incapable of serving in the military, so they assigned me to this mission. Now, as you probably know, our nations have never made first contact, and Calerost has no idea of the politics, customs, etc of the region. Neither the troopers nor the officers who sent them knew what they ware up against. The ship was guarded by Izhmâb gazatûk, blood swords, the peak of Miraline combat prowess. Highly armored, above averagely strong even for the Miraline, and well trained. Until the creation of the hataloqueltar around 10 years into the future Calerost wouldn’t have anything that could deal with them without heavy losses. Less than lethal wouldn’t survive the first encounter. It quickly became kill or be killed. The battle for the ship began.

menwhile…

“Interesting. How come it became so divided if you all have the same ancestry? Infighting? Widespread spaceflight and ftl before your home planet was unified? A large empire’s collapse? Please, I’m genuinely intrigued. Since we achieved spaceflight we’ve never encountered something like this. I mean to be fair we haven’t encountered ftl capable civilizations at all but you get it.”

As casualties mounted, Union troopers would switch to a very different tactic. Troopers would load full slugs in their tubes, and would shoot out their Miraline attacker’s legs, stabilize them, and ship them out. It took several hours, but eventually they would clear the ship top to bottom. Unfortunately, most bloodswords would pop a pill that stops their hearts whenever capture seemed imminent. The officers were far more cooperative with the technique, and would be dragged away to black sites, where they were interrogated, charged with crimes, and would rot away in a cell for the rest of their lives.
