“Simple job really. Jump in, hit a couple civvie freighters, cause some havoc, and run away. Pay’s pretty good. 20,000 creds.”

“Well, no time like the present.”

“Helmsman, bring us underway.”

Commodore Hinako Mira

“I suppose?!”

Anger rolled through the particularly short Commodore’s face, something she’d continuously been reprimanded for throughout her career.

“You want me to trust the CIS’ Direct Action Corps? So we’re just feeding corpses to Void now, are we?!”

“You know we can’t-”

“SIX SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS OVER FIVE YEARS!”

The CIC had been soundproofed multiple times over the course of her term in service. While on shore leave after their first week or so with her, most had soundproof headphones stored out of sight.

“You ask me to do a First Contact, I do it! I ferry an important diplomat? Sure! I ask for a real special forces unit.. No! Ugh. Fine. If they botch the mission, I will be speaking to your supervisor. You understand that?”

She sighed.

“Helmsgirl bring us underway. Full Ahead.”

“On it. Course charted.”

“Arrived at target destination. Exiting silverspace now.”

“…We see anything?”

“Lots of traffic, but nothing matching our predetermined signature for two Callistos, a Locastes, or a Rigel. Nor any silverspace signature besides ours. Place is clean, cleaner than clean.”

“Line. Suppose we’ll give them pre-warming. Maybe we won’t have to use DAC today.”

“Line is ready aye ma’am!”

“This is Commodore Hinako Mira of the Vandalence Compact broadcasting in the blind. Requesting to speak to system authority about a possible hostile attack in this area.”

“Report!” The surprisingly loud voice of Grand Admiral Alexandra Varson, Duchess of Nyvari, sounded through the stations CIC as radar and communication specialists tried to figure out just what was going on.

“Ma’am, Unknown vessel in system, 500 meters, drive sig isn’t ours nor Vulkan or Chr’Kahr. Their weapons appear to be cold as of right now.” One of the Captains stated.

Alexandra furrowed her brow in both confusion and annoyance, right as one of the Comm Specialists shouted.

“Incoming broadcast, non-military channel!”

“Put it through.”

“Yes Sir.” The Specialist flipped a few switches before the broadcast sounded.

“Vandalence Compact? Lieutenant, check records to see if we have anything on them.” Alexandra ordered, as the called upon Lieutenant began cross referencing with forcibly acquired Vulkan and Chr’Kahr records.

“Anything?”

“No, Ma’am, we have nothing on them.”

Alexandra didn’t like that answer, primarily because it left the answer as to whether or not their hostile or even humanoid too open. “Set all ships to Combat Alert Yellow and divert civilian traffic away from that ship. Notify GroundCom of possible threat and send out Priority One signal to nearby systems to spin up their Jumpdrives in case this turns hot. Am I clear?”

“Yes Ma’am!” As the CIC began condescending into organized chaos.

One of the Leading Comms Officer, a Commander, spoke up. “Ma’am, what about the broadcast?”

Alexandra sighed. “Open a channel with them, priority two.”

“Yes Ma’am” He stated as he barked orders at his subordinates to open the channel.

“Channel Open!” One of the Comms Specialist sounded.

“This is Grand Admiral Alexandra Varson of the Imperial Denvarian Navy and CO of the Capitol Defense Fleet. I wish to speak face to face regarding your claim in regards to a hostile attack.”

Mira hands off control to her Fleet Commander, Johnathan Cuwatt, heading down to the Flight Deck.

“Now launch the ready five and go to action stations for flight operations. Bring Ketch 1-1 up and have it prepared for flight. Fleet Commander is the Officer on Deck.”

“Should we prepare an orbital grid incase things go wrong?”

“Go ahead. I need a security detail for Ketch 1-1.”

Soon after giving the alien Commodore the proper coordinates, Grand Admiral Alexandra made her way to the Hanger, not before calling in some security forces in the form of a Marine Platoon, just in case.

Of course, Commodore Mira’s little warning gave Alexandra the impression that both parties would be cautious of each other, she didn’t know what the commodore’s people has been through, but considering how the last Denvari meeting with a foreign species ended with a declaration of war, Alexandra had a right to be cautious.

Of course, that brought her back to why this had even occurred, the alien commodore had come bringing warnings of some kind of hostile attack on the Imperial Capitol, a foolish endeavor in Alexandra’s opinion, the CDF is the most well funded fleet north of the occupied territories, never mind the absurd amount of early warning systems every inhabited Imperial System had, a hostile force may get a handful of shots off, but would immeadiately face overwhelming force in response. The boon behind this possible attack is that the CDF may be warned ahead of time and already have weapons hot and the area cleared of civies.

However, the counterargument Alexandra had running was that the Commodore was a part of a false flag like operation and wanted to get aboard the station in order to possibly sabotage or otherwise distract the upper links of the chain of command to allow for her vessels to easily separate and pick off the CDF before they could properly organize. It was a bit unlikely, but Denvari History was littered with incidents like it, so a healthy bit of skepticism on Alexandra’s part was to be needed, along with a Marine Platoon.

As she approached the Hanger, Alexandra put a pin in those thoughts for later and steeled herself for this actual first contact. Entering the Hanger, she finds the Marine Platoon already awaiting her and she takes her spot, awaiting for the Alien Commodore.

She did find the Alien Shuttle’s rather… janky entry into the rather spacious hanger a bit jarring, but chalked it up to either urgency or sheer pilot incompetence. This was a Hanger Bay, not a Flight Deck. And finally the alien shuttles back door slides open and Alexandra finds herself face to face with the Alien Commodore.

“Welcome Aboard, I’m Grand Admiral Alexandra Varson, I presume you’re Commodore Mira?”

The ships of Mira’s Task Unit rushed out to meet them, but as the group was an order of magnitude larger, the Syndicate Raiders put a blocking force in their way.

“Combat Alert Red to All Ships!” Was the general order that was called out, by whom, no one knew, all that was certain was that Hostile Forces were in the Capitol system.

All Across the system, Point Defense Batteries began arcing out, while Missiles and Torpedoes were launched in an effective swarm, not only to overwhelm Anti-Missile and Point Defense systems of Hostile Warships, but also to weaken or drop shields to allow the Main Positronic Batteries of the Warships to make it through.

MAC Volleys were briefly sent out, but were being held back out of fear of Friendly Fire, a similar situation for Phalanx Lasers.

Most warships that got the chance were to put up Emergency Heavy Shielding in order to minimize overall damage.

Rather fortunately, civilians ships had already been placed on the other side of the system due to the Compact’s arrival.

Fighters and Interceptors were already either on patrol or ready to be launched, and were now racing to meet the enemy forces.

Overall, it became increasingly clear that these hostiles had severely underestimated Denvarian Ships and Defenses.

Meanwhile,

Honestly, Alexandra was rather relieved at the Commodore’s general appearance, true, the Grand Admiral could tell she wasn’t fully human, and while it wasn’t her hair or eyes (If anything, it made her resemble a Denvarian Human), it was very pale skin. True, some Denvari did have Pale skin, but it was very rare to see outside of Half-Vulkan Children.

Regardless, it did mean that further relations would entirely depend on factors not regarding species, and currently that factor was reacting to these hostile forces.

“Lets head to CIC, we’ll coordinate our forces from there.” She motioned for the Marine Platoon to head to their designated battle station as the Hanger Bay quickly began preparing Interceptors for launch. Alexandra turned back to the Commodore.

“If we have any luck, we’ll get there on time to actually make any meaningful impact.” She said with a smirk.

Shunting into realspace, other elements of the raiders descended upon the civilian ships. Several carried stolen and heavily modified anti-proton particle lances, which were put to use against security forces sortieing out to fight them. Ships not immediately at Combat Alert Red were put for a ride as 470 coilgun rounds ripped into them, followed by scraping fire from 380s and 180s. The rest held on for a little longer, their shields and armor being chipped down as Syndicate ships coordinated their fires enmasse, five to ten ships would task on Emergency Heavy Shielded ships, 470s, 380s, and even a few hastily mounted particle lances.

Syndicate PD was an impressive feat on its own. Rivaling Calerost’s own designs, their knock off Buckler system would mislead, divert, or otherwise trick the torpedoes’ seeker into the void, into an enemy ship, or into a corvette’s PD net. On the main battleline, Compact ships would employ older Line of Sight Beam Riding (LOSBR) missiles to crack individual corvettes, slowly opening the heavier ships to the assault. Both sides traded particle lance, coilgun, helicalgun, and railgun fire, with ships constantly cycling through the battleline to bring their damage control teams onto the hull. Syndicate pilots and their drone wingmen danced with Compact Pixies and Denvari Starhawks, managing to trade evenly or outperform their Denvari and Compact counterparts.

It seemed evenly matched, for now.

“Status!” Alexandra barked as she and the Commodore marched into the CIC.

“12 of our own Ships are disabled! Unknown in regards to the raiders! Nearby Systems are deploying their respective fleets for backup!” A Comms Officer reported.

“HIMS Denvaria is enroute to our location! ETA 1 Hour!” Another Comms Officer barked.

“Damn it, Commodore, any ideas on how-”

“Ships Entering System!”

Alexandra, who had briefly turned to the Commodore, whipped her head around to the radar officer with clear confusion.

“What?!”

3,000 Kilometers from King Jason II Memorial Station,

Three Bright Flashes suddenly appeared from effectively nowhere as three jet black ships emerged from the flashes covered in a thin layer of ice-like material that was quickly shed from the angled ships that had minimal visible weaponry beyond a singular firing port at the front.

The three angled ships slowly came to a stop shortly after their warp into system, their firing ports angled towards the enemy ships main battleline.

HIMXS Galaxy WMTS-001
CIC
Starton System, Capitol District

Inside the CIC of the HIMXS Galaxy, a Wave Motion Test Ship equipped and designed to test all technology related to Wave Motion, Commodore James Forester, of the Emeraldian Royal Intelligence and Defence Agency, Testing Division, sat calmly on his command chair. “Prepare to fire Wave Motion Lance, Full Dispersion Mode.”

“Preparing to Fire Wave Motion Lance, Full Dispersion Mode, Aye!” A Crewman stated as the distinct noise of the Lance beginning to charge sounded off.

“Pressure Rising in Chamber.”

The Galaxy, alongside her sisterships, the HIMXS Dark Star and HIMXS Supernova, had been called to defend the Capitol against enemy forces.

“Charge at 100% and Climbing!”

The primary reason for this was the Wave Motion Lance, something that had only been developed a few years ago and test fired about 3 months ago, but it had been that very test fire that had proven how destructive the lance could be against an enemy force, even if it left the ship without shields or weapons.

“Charge at 120%! Lance Ready to Fire!”

This Syndicate was about to face something they for sure weren’t prepared for, three times over.

Throughout all of this, at the firing port of the three test ships, energy had been gathering into a sphere.

“FIRE!”

In a matter of an instant, three beams were released, only to split into dozens of smaller arced beams about three ship lengths away from the firing ports.

The Wave Motion Guns effects were felt near instantly across the battlespace. Compact, Denvari, and Syndicate warships were all struck, destroying ships, stripping armor and shields, and knocking down communication suites. As the fighting slowed to a crawl with all ships attempting to regain vital systems, syndicate ships would take the opportunity to flee. Forcing their emergency silverspace shields up, they would make erratic jumps out of system. Away from the initial volley, the commerce raiders would see the wave motion guns firing, and after finishing their fire missions, jumped away. Syndicate pilots, left stranded by their ships jumping without them, would raise their compact counterparts and surrender, preferring to surrender to a known threat than an unknown one.

In CIC, Mira anxiously awaited for reports to filter to her of the compact ships. Upon hearing of most of their safety, she collapsed into one of her security detail.

Two Weeks Later…

The investigation into Commodore Hinako Mira’s conduct during the Skirmish at Starton had cleared her of any wrongdoing. Out of 14,587 Spacers, 5,952 were killed in action, with 3,002 suffering debilitating career ending injuries. Hinako Mira would recieve a lateral rank change and serve out her final years as Admiral Administrator for Third Fleet.

Alexandra sighed as she continued to go through the various documents related to the “Starton Incident of 2549” that had occurred two weeks prior.

She herself had been spared any blame regarding the friendly fire incident with the Wave Motion Lance, and was commended for her initial reaction and keeping the CDF on standby.

The same couldn’t be said for the Vice Director of Intelligence who had greenlit the deployment of the Wave Motion Lance, a move that cost the HIMS Karlston CG-205, HIMS Lamia DDG-456, HIMS For King and Country FFG-445, and the HIMS Spirit of Fire FFG-405, alongside the deaths of 5,587 Imperial Sailors and Pilots. Safe to say, the Vice Director was relieved of her command and sentenced to capital treason against the Imperial Military. The captains of the Galaxy, Dark Star, and Supernova were pardoned of any wrongdoing, they were simply following orders, but were still transferred to other commands and demoted to Commander.

Imperial Losses for the entire incident weren’t horrible in the long run; 1 Battlecruiser disabled, 2 Cruisers disabled, 1 Cruiser Destroyed, 4 Destroyers Disabled, 4 Destroyers destroyed, 6 Frigates disabled, 8 Frigates Destroyed, and 12 Corvettes Destroyed or Disabled. 48 Private Vessels were destroyed, with 128 damaged. Thankfully, most of these were empty Cargo Vessels returning to their home stations, as such, there was minimal civilian casualties, the final tally being 248 lost. Military Causalities consisted of 10,435 Lost, most of these in the initial strike or the Wave Motion Lance, with a not insignificant number being pilots.

The Grand Admiral was broken out of her thoughts by the beeping of a message to her personal holo-terminal. Sighing, she pressed the reply button. “This is the Grand Admiral.”

“Ma’am, The Compact Diplomats have arrived in system, you have been ordered by the Emperor to escort them down to Starton, you will receive further instructions then.”

“I understand” Alexandra said, she had Imperial Orders after all. She stood up and made her way to the Elevator.

After entering the elevator car, the Grand Admiral was left to her own thoughts. The first thoughts entering her mind being the incident two weeks prior, and in particular, the firing of the Wave Motion Lance. Prior to that massive show of force, the Grand Admiral had only heard rumors of Wave Motion Technology, and based on the face of the Compact Commodore afterwards, the Empire had showed a technological feat in weaponry and FTL Travel, albeit at the cost of both Imperial and Compact Personnel and Ships.

And that led her to the former Vice Director of Intelligence, and the absolute verbal asskicking she received from the Imperial Military Council about the ill advised firing of a known to be highly destructive weapon into a battle line that contained Imperial and Compact Warships. At the very least, the former Vice Director had prevented herself from furthering her own execution by arguing against the IMC’s logic.

Her mind then wandered towards the Compact, the first nation since the Vulkan First Contact about 200 years ago to attempt to engage diplomatic relations with the Empire, hopefully, unlike the Vulkan’s, the Compact would be more successful in their efforts.

In Alexandra’s opinion, unlike the pre-conquest Vulkan’s, who were logical, arrogant, know-it-all’s, the Compact seemed to be more of a nation that would at the very least not royally piss off the Empire.

If anything, Alexandra was actually welcoming of establish relations with the Compact and the other nations it already had diplomatic relations with, not only would it bring some new interactions economically, diplomatically, and militarily, it would bring the Empire into the rest of the Sector. Alexandra’s contacts within the long since disused Ministry of Foreign Affairs were reporting massive funding increases, hiring new staff, and plan’s finally being made to the use the also long since abandoned ‘Embassy Row’ in Starton’s Government District. Her fellow Officers in the Imperial Military were looking forward to possible future International Military Exercises and Technology Sharing. Alexandra knew that the Denvarian Economy would benefit from entirely new markets within the Voidsea and any other nation the Compact had friendly relations with.

The Grand Admiral’s Thoughts were dispersed by the soft ding of the elevator indicating she had arrived at her floor. Sighing, she exited, finding her two assigned Marine Guards waiting for her.

Both Saluted. “Ma’am” “Ma’am”

“At Ease.” Alexandra ordered as she began to walk towards the Hanger where a shuttle awaited. Both Marine ended their salutes as ordered and began to follow the Grand Admiral. As the Grand Admiral walked down the Hallway, Enlisted and Officers stepped aside and saluted as she walked past out of respect to her rank and status as the Duchess of Nyvari.

After entering the Hanger, she stood where she had two weeks prior and awaited for the Compact Diplomat’s own Shuttle.

“Acknowledged Warden’s Rite, Grand Admiral Varson has assigned your vessel the escort ships HIMS Andrei Sirianu DDLG-555* and the HIMS Wyvern DDG-456 for the duration of your stay in system. “Runner!”

“Yes ma’am?”

“Tell Miss Kelsey to get dressed in her ceremonial attire and show her to the flight line.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“Intel, are we getting markers on lifepods that might’ve slipped away from initial recovery?”

“I don’t think so, but it might be worth taking a peak at where the battleline was. Lots of salvage still there. Some pods could’ve jammed in their launching bay, and they could still be trapped there.”

“Should we launch a couple some Satyrs and check?”

“It’s worth a look while we’re here. We don’t know when we’ll be back.”

“Very well, make it so.”

In the pressurized hangars, a group of deckhands are cluttered around a A/C-19 ‘Sprite.’ Most are moving crates, while others are performing maintenance checks and fueling the craft. The deckhand chief sees Tisera approaching the flight line and exclaims

“Detail, attention!”

The work stops as the detail snaps to attention. The chief salutes Tisera, his left hand in a fist at his side, his right in a fist on his heart.

“Good Evening, Ma’am!”

“At ease, as you were.”

The work resumes as quickly as it stopped.

“What’s all that?” she motions to the crates

“Crates of items we may or may not need, depending on how long our stay is there. While the Cornet assured me that most of the marines would be human, edhel or halfsies, the colour sergeant is a full serniani, and she’s insisting on coming along, so we got her respirators. Where’s your Ensis?”

“My what?”

“Of course…”

Tisera walks over to a container labeled “PERSONAL,” opening it and retrieving a slender blade. She inspects both methodically before resheathing the blade and handing it to Arabelle, motioning for her to fasten the sheath to her ceremonial dress.

“This is a Kyrstan Ensis. Nominally, officers and diplomats carry an Ensis from their cluster of origin but… You don’t have one so… So you can borrow one of mine.”

“I was supposed to be issued an Ensis?”

“The navy and secretariat have lists of approved vendors from the clusters. You’re supposed to forge it yourself, but not everyone’s a smith. I had some time when I was a kid, so please be gentle with her.”

“Okay, alright… I’ll have to consult the site.”

“Let’s get moving. It’s a long ride to the station.”

“Well, here you are. The orbital grid is primed, so if things go wrong we can transmat back to Warden’s Rite. I’ll be with you, alongside the other diplomats. We’ve got your back. When we step off, I’ll be greeting the Grand Admiral first, then you.”

“Grand Admiral Varson, I’m Fleet Commander Tisera of the Compact Navy. To my left is Chief of Mission Kelsey. She’ll be your primary contact into Vandalence for our stay here.”

“Good evening, ma’am.”

“To my right is Cornet Peter Jekio, he’s our security liaison.”

“Good evening, ma’am.”

“We’d like to thank you for your hospitality this evening and extend a share of our goodwill. Sir?”

Jekio hands Kelsey a revolver with a silver finish with the words ‘Fiat Victoria, Fiat Lux’ engraved onto the barrel. She posits to hand Varson the revolver.
