Thestilvan: The Language of Business

Thestilvan:

The Language of Business

Throughout history, there have been a variety of lingua francas. In the Cape of Bareland, that language is Thestilvan. The native name of Thestilvan is Balfa (/bʰalfa/) and “Thestilva” in Thestilvan means business, making Thestilvan the language of business.

Thestilvan is the largest language in the Thestilva-Cape language family, consisting of a variety of languages located along the Cape of Bareland. There is currently a hypothesis connecting the Thestilva-Cape languages and the Denvari languages, however due to the lack of tangible, historical evidence and the large divergence in languages it is unlikely there is a connection.

Throughout this thread, you will learn Thestilvan; all of its quirks, issues, and features, wrapped up in one course. Happy learning!

Lesson One

The Alphabet

Thestilvan is written with a modified standard Austral alphabet. The order of the letters is similar to Austral, with the extra letters added and the unneeded letters removed.

Letter One: A

A (Aa) is the first letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the a in hat.

Letter Two: Ba

Ba (Bb) is the second letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the b in bot. However, before vowels, the ba becomes aspirated. When a letter is aspirated, it is accompanied with a strong burst of breath when you say the letter. In Austral, some consonants (like p) become aspirated when it is at the beginning of the word or when it begins a stressed syllable, like the p in pin.

Letter Three: Ca

Ca (Cc) is the third letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the s in sat.

Letter Four: Ça

Ça (Çç) is the fourth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the z in zero.

Letter Five: Da

Da (Dd) is the fifth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the d in dog.

Letter Six: Eh

Eh (Ee) is the sixth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the ay in may.

Letter Seven: Fa

Fa (Ff) is the seventh letter of the Thestivan alphabet. It is pronounced like the f in fog.

Letter Eight: Ha

Ha (Hh) is the eighth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. Depending on context, it can produce two different sounds. In most situations, it is pronounced like the h in hunt. However, if ha comes at the end of a word, then it will be pronounced as a sudden stop, similar to the space in “uh oh.”

Letter Nine: Ĥa

Ĥa (Ĥĥ) is the ninth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the th in the.

Letter Ten: Ȟa

Ȟa (Ȟȟ) is the tenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the th in thin.

Letter Eleven: I

I (Ii) is the eleventh letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the ee in free.

Letter Twelve: Ja

Ja (Jj) is the twelfth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the y in yellow.

Letter Thirteen: Ka

Ka (Kk) is the thirteenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. There is no good example in Austral, but it is similar to the k in okay.

ooc note

This is pronounced as the voiceless palatal plosive, similar to the qu in the French qui. I don’t remember the IRP name for French, though, so I decided to omit it.

Letter Fourteen: La

La (Ll) is the fourteenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the l in leg.

Letter Fifteen: Oh

Oh (Oo) is the fifteenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the aw in yawn in many dialects of Austral.

Letter Sixteen: Sa

Sa (Ss) is the sixteenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like z in standard Alman zeit.

Letter Seventeen: Ta

Ta (Tt) is the seventeenth letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. Usually, it is pronounced like the t in tug, however it changes when it precedes the letter a. When preceding the letter a, ta is pronounced like the th in thin in some Austral dialects (but without aspiration). It is pronounced like regular t, but the tongue is placed on the tip of the teeth instead of behind them.

Letter Eighteen: Uh

Uh (Uu) is the eighteenth and penultimate letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the oo in boot.

Letter Nineteen: Va

Va (Vv) is the ninteenth and final letter of the Thestilvan alphabet. It is pronounced like the v in van.
