The Federal Armed Forces
The Federation’s military is made up of two main branches:
- The Space Force
- The Planetary Force
The Space Forces are responsible for all military assets and personnel located in space. This includes starships, starfighters, as well as space stations and their garrisons with the exception of troop transports.
The Space Force is organized into three cores:
- The Naval Core (known as simply the Navy)
- The Station Core
- The Starfighter Core
Starships of the Navy are organized into fleets (30 to 100 ships). Each fleet is commanded by an Admiral and has an analytical AI that helps the Admiral to asses battlefield situation and formulate tactics.
The Station Core maintains several space stations in each system, usually near the hyperlanes and major planets or the central star(s). These stations often serve as fleet bases and border crossings alongside their primary function.
The Starfighter Core usually doesn’t operate on its own, outside of special military operations. It plays a mostly support role, providing starfighters to stations and naval vessels.
The Planetary Force handles all ground assets and personnel. This includes infantry soldiers, artillery, tanks, mechs, ground infrastructure, aerial units and transport ships.
The Planetary Force is divided into Cores:
- The Infantry Core
- The Armored Core
- The Jetdiver Core
- The Airforce
- The Presidential Guard
The Infantry Core makes up the majority of the Planetary Force. It includes infantry soldiers and supporting artillery, mechs and various armored vehicles. During military operations it makes up the bulk of the frontlines and usually performs the first assault during a planetary landing. It maintains garrisons on every inhabited planet of the Federation.
The Armored Core is made up of tanks, mobile infantry and supporting artillery. Mechs aren’t common, but sometimes fill the role of scouts. Its main purpose is creating breakthroughs in enemy lines.
The Jetdiver Core is an elite unit, specialized in aerial assaults. It’s very similar to paratroopers, but utilizes jetpacks, which grant greater control in the air (but aren’t enough to fly). It often supports planetary landings and performs operations behind enemy lines. It has its own dropships, but relies on the Airforce to gain aerial superiority.
The Airforce operates all in atmospheric aircraft, such as planes, helicopters and missiles. It supports ground offensives and planetary landings and has the control over all nuclear warheads of the Planetary Force. It closely cooperates with the Jetdiver Core.
The Presidential Guard is the most elite unit in the Planetary Force, created as a part of the Ascension Program (more about that later). It’s composed of Supersoldiers, utilizing extensive genetic modifications and cybernetics. They are recruited only from military ranks, not the public like all other units. Perform the most difficult tasks and guard the most important government officials.
Each Core is responsible for its own military infrastructure, however some is directly controlled by the Armed Forces.
Soldiers, except for Presidential Guards, are recruited from volunteers, who can be of any species or gender. During times of war conscription can be instituted.
During peace time the Armed Forces are controlled by the Ministry of the Military, which is also responsible for technological development and military industry, which is entirely state owned. Private companies are banned from manufacturing arms, which is why the Federation doesn’t utilize Alarian equipment.
During war the control switches to the High Command, which is composed of high ranking commanders from both the Planetary and Space Force. However technology and industry stay in the hands of the Ministry.
The FID often collaborates with the military, gathering intelligence, performing interrogations on captives and conducting various operation (sabotage, assassinations etc.).
