Ah, the Voidsea. That intriguing, pirate-riddled mosaic of nations and polities stuck between the spacetime-warping horrors of the Ventuu Badlands and the potential threat of MAGHAM’s territorial expansion. A volume of space that most coempireal Habships routinely avoided as to not have to go through skirmishes with interstellar pirates, with only some adventuring within its stars for the thrill of such things.

Despite that, the Confluence had still considered it best to contact and establish relations with the few large-enough interstellar polities scattered throughout the Voidsea that, as far as they could ascertain from the collection of data they gathered, wouldn’t be directly aggressive towards them. The situation regarding the Syndicate was rather odd, to say the least, and having it be the Confluence’s only connection to the region was the last thing they wanted. Therefore, the Orion League, a prosperous emergent interstellar polity known for being considerably xenophilic and open-minded, was chosen as the first “target” for the Confluence’s diplomatic establishment within the Voidsea.

This time, however, things would be done differently from the other recent first contacts: since both larger ships and hyperAI ambassadors seemed to harbor negative responses from those contacted in one way or another, this diplomatic expedition would revert to the oldest coeampireal protocols from the Integration Age. As was done for the first contacts with the Usca, Tihumuuh, Xe’qarin and all the other Flowkin, a Terragen, a Silvalian and a Galactyakin would go forth to represent the Confluence in the first contact: one member for each clade family of the Founderkin. Though the acceptance of the people of Orion wasn’t questioned, the diplomat Princes thought it best to play safe, and send three ambassadors of the progenitor species.

Tsoli Litabij, a human AI embodied within a humanoid nanotechnological body, was chosen as a representative for the Terragens for his extensive experience as a mediator for many of the intra-polity conflicts within the Confluence.

Heilige Rhamivend’r, a nearbaseline Kesheia with biotech augmentations, was elected to represent the Galactyakin as the former leader of the first contact with the Trrarrusians two hundred years prior.

Soeletius Candoriaal, a genemodded Silvalian cyborg, was brought forth as representative for the Silvalians thanks to their position as a member of the Coempireal Integration Council.

The three ambassadors would be carried to their destination by the Golauestir, a war-capable Habship considerably smaller than the Battlemoons used in the previous first contacts, being “only” 25 kilometers in lenght. The HyperAI residing within the ship’s computational substrates and acting as its guiding force, known as Shereen, would only accompany the representatives of the Confluence over to the Orion League’s territories: it would not participate in the first contact in any way, only taking direct retaliatory action if the situation somehow escalated. Though this was technically going against the old protocols, as HyperAIs were still involved in the contacts and diplomatic missions of the past, it was decided that from now on they would only play passive roles unless a first contact involved another AI-friendly civ or hyper-intelligent entity.

Truly, it was best to play it safe with the rest of the Sector. Of course, those contacted would be fully informed of the HyperAIs and the inner workings of the Confluence, but those were things best kept for further encounters rather than first appearences.

The internal O’Neill Cylinder habitat of the Golauestir.

After almost a day spent travelling through the Hyperbrane, the Golauestir used the mass of a particularly large comet as an anchor for re-entering realspace within the Syiro system’s seemingly untouched oort cloud, almost a light year away from its primary. Tachyon scans showed that the closest objects to the ship were large swarms of orbital stations, detection arrays and weapons emplacements fifty thousand astronomical units inwards. Their primary point of interest was Maestro, the capital of the Orion League and the most populous and active planet in the system. But all that would come later.

”Well, here we are then. Kind of a shame that we couldn’t use the regular void bubble drive and get here the long way. It would have been nice to spend some months on the ship and get acquainted with the local culture."

The three diplomats were conversing with one another while resting in a private hall within the ship’s internal structure, with large windows overlooking the landscape of the Golauestir’s internal habitat, rotating down below and far above and all around them. On the opposite side from the windows, close to the large gilded cushions where they were sitting, a series of floating holograms displayed real-time scans and models of the Syiro system and all of the objects within it.

“Yeah, it would have, but I guess these kinds of things can’t really wait so long. Six months aren’t that much, but many things could change before even getting to our destination, and we don’t really want that.”

”A shame indeed."

“Well, at least we’ll probably be able to spend more time here in the League while we carry out our mission. If things remain nice and friendly, that is.”

”Should we be worrying about the swarms of defensive stations around the Heliopause? The last time I was met with something like that during a first contact things were about to escalate pretty quickly, ahah."

“I doubt it. If we clearly state our intentions through the message we’re about to send, we should be perfectly fine. They’re known for taking in all kinds of refugees and aid-seekers, and that doesn’t exactly strike me as particularly jingoistic behaviour.”

“I agree with Soeletius: as long as we immediately get across to them that we aren’t pirates, things ought to be alright.”

“And speaking of doing things immediately” - interjected Shereen, their voice coming from the glowing holograms besides the representatives - “you three should probably get to sending that message. We have already been spotted by the system’s detector arrays.”

“Oh my. Well, off we go then. If you could please send the message to them, that would be great, Shereen.”

“On it. Relaying the pre-recorded message through the tachyon communicators and sending it to all available receptive frequencies in the area.”

VESSELS AND STATIONS OF THE SYRIO SYSTEM, THIS IS THE HABITAT-SHIP GOLAUESTIR, HEREBY SENT TO REPRESENT IN THIS FIRST CONTACT THE CONFLUENCE OF EMPIRES, A VAST AND DIVERSE CIVILIZATION LOCATED RIMWARDS AND SPINWARDS IN SECTOR A1-0 COMPARED TO YOUR CURRENT POSITION IN THE GALAXY. WE HARBOR NO HOSTILE INTENT TOWARDS YOU, AND WE KINDLY ASK TO BE ALLOWED TO TRAVERSE FURTHER WITHIN THIS SYSTEM FOR PROPER DIPLOMATIC TALKS AND AMBASSADORIAL EXCHANGES TO TAKE PLACE IN A LOCATION OF YOUR CHOOSING. IF YOU CAN HEAR US, PLEASE RESPOND.

Platform Echo Shatter Unicorn Sixteen is one of the thousands of defense stations just inside the heliopause, serving as the early warning & system-wide defense zone. With a multi-function low probability of intercept radar, they had detected the unknown 25 kilometer long object about five light years ago, with their emissions only being detected for the past few minutes. Platforms had been at general quarters for the better part of an hour, most of whom had launched their spaceframes, unlocked their safeties on their weapon systems and while hadn’t achieved a fire control lock, had a positional error considered ‘acceptable’ by modern standards. Though most had concluded that it would be impossible to miss such a large target, should it come to that.

Every 11th, 12th, and 13th of April for the last forty years, the Persephone Freedom of Movement Celebration occurs. The honor, a rare tradition from the pre-sundering years, gives a specific military unit the right to enter the city with their colors and weapons. Persephone gained the honor through her gallant actions during the sword incursions, the most famous of which being the patrol fleet’s spaceframes intercepting a Relativistic Kinetic Kill Vehicle heading for Maestro. The celebration is separated into three parts; A parade through downtown, the civilian’s watch, typically occurring on a carrier, and the aerospace show over the Junaso Sea.

While the Freedom of Movement Celebration happens, a meeting is occurring at Embassy Square between Deck Lieutenant Stephen Lormaki of the Compact, Sub-Lieutenant Shihori Nishioka of the Union, and Commander Johnathan Mirth of the League. While not a diplomat, Rear Admiral Asana Mardoa, fleet commanding officer of the Persephone and a well known officer for her actions during the Great Revenge.

“I do believe that’s everyone.”

“Do be quick, I wish to partake in the Civilian’s Watch.”

“It happens every year..”

“I transfer out next February.”

“You know, you could take those leave days you’re hoarding.”

“But what if I need a half year of leave?”

“Then I suppose you’re outta luck.”

“You’re not one for small talk.”

“Small talk doesn’t make this meeting progress any faster.”

“Small talk keeps diplomats sane. Suppose he’s right, move on.”

“The Voidsea patrol is up for it’s extension term this August.”

“Anything wrong with the present treaty?”

“We’ve been doing a lot of shooting and disabling of Syndicate Vessels near our border. CIS is talking about some spice mine-”

Asana Mardoa’s wristcomp lights up with a message from one of Admiral Kagaya’s Communications Officers

“Ma’am, intercepted communications report unknown vessel at the EWDZ. They’re requesting a diplomat.”

“Very well, Mirth, you getting anything about a.. Ship?”

“Oh shit.”

Mirth excuses himself from the room before running towards the League Diplomatic Service’s compound.

“Well, this seems important. We can snap back to this tomorrow? Next week?”

“I got nothing planned.”

“Works for me.”

“Very well, Sachi, trasmat me to the Admiral Kagaya.”

“On it. Transmat primed.”

Asana fades away digitally out of the conference room

“Ooh, that never gets old. Someone get me the sitch.”

“Radar reports indicate a vessel around 25 kilometers in length, 10 in height.”

“Riftwalker Charlotte reports an impassable data-spike in the area, similar to what a standard AI has. She says it’s a tough crack, but possible.”

“Alright, set condition three, get me the bombers on a three minute launch window. It’s not my authority what happens here, it’s more about how they play it. Tell Charlotte not to try anything unless shooting starts.”

“Yes ma’am, on it ma’am.”

LEAGUE DIPLOMATIC COMPOUND PRIVATE RELAY

“Habitat-Ship Golauestir on behalf of the Orion League and her principalities we welcome you to the Syrio System. Transmitting System-wide map. Proceed to zone Jacket, Mage, Purple. You will be escorted by spaceframes of the Compact Navy, Union Naval Defense Forces, and Orion Star Navy. Deviations from course or any hostile action will result in retaliation.”

OF COURSE. WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY.

“We are being escorted towards an orbital structure above Maestro, a cuboid 250 kilometers in length and width, and 50 kilometers in height. It is double the size of the largest O’Neill Cylinders, and uses artificial means to generate a gravitational field within itself.”

“An orbital city around their capital planet, to put it simply.”

“I do not know exactly how yet, but I am relatively certain that they have detected my presence. I sensed my internal data processes being scanned and observed, though I do not know by who and through which methods. I will be activating my memetic firewall and putting my cybersecurity systems on alert.”

”Well, that sounds rather troubling. Could it be a third player not part of the Orion League?"

“We would be unable to verify that, even if it happened to be the case. My inability to recognize their scanning method implies either unknown energies that I am yet unable to analyze, or even interference from a different plane of existence.”

“It would probably be best to relay this immediately to the rest of the Confluence, and especially the Godnet. We have never encountered this type of interference before, and it has rather troubling implications.”

“I am already doing so, though I highly doubt that the other hyperAIs will be able to identify the nature of this phenomenon with small amounts of relayed data. Maybe the Princes and Overlords will be able to offer more insight, but even the greatest minds still need appropriate amounts of data to start with.”

“Let us hope that your raised cyberdefences will be enough to keep the Golauestir safe. Speaking of which, it would probably be best to keep our monopole fusion engines on the ready: if our void bubble drive gets corrupted or disabled either by orionite escalation or from offensive action from an unknown third player, we will have to reach relativistic speeds and escape as soon as possible.”

”It would indeed be best. We know that the polities of the Voidsea all use an interdimensional FTL drive, so the Golauestir at full acceleration should be able to outrun them even in the worst case scenario. Maybe deploying Metric Monopole Collapsers could hinder the functionality of their drives…"

“Whatever the case, you should ready yourselves to disembark from the Golauestir and begin diplomatic talks with the Orionites: we are about to reach their designated meeting point soon. While you carry out the first contact procedures, I will continue scanning the system in both realspace and the hyperbrane to try and detect the possible source of the unidentified scan.”
