Explaining Terminology

“What in the twilight stars is CIPDS? Is it great value CIWS?”

– Major Robert Arch, 59th Test and Support Division

This section intends to be a catch all for Terminology that Serniani use.

CIPDS

CIPDS
Acronym
download
A Goalkeeper CIWS, similar in concept to a Serniani CIPDS System

Close In Proximity/Point Defense System (CIPDS) (Pronounced See-pds) is the catch all term for Interceptor or Point Defense Weapons on Serniani Vessels. These range from 50mm Flak Guns, to Laser Weapons designed to combat Missiles in their Sprint Phase. CIPDS also includes the radar systems needed to detect, lock and intercept, which can be helpful in a pinch if you are receiving a wall of fire and need to intercept.

"Cold" Launch

“Cold” Launch
Technical Meaning

A Cold Launch is where a missile is ejected out of the Launcher reorients towards the target/cruise points, before activating the main thruster. The Callsign for Cold Launches is “Camper.”

"Hot" Launch

“Hot” Launch
Technical Meaning

A Hot Launch is where a missile’s primary thruster is ignited in the launch tube, leading to it exiting quickly. The Callsign for Hot Launches is “Brawler.”

Missile Phases

Missile Phases
Technical Guide

Missile Phases are split into various phases. The first phase is call the Operational Programing Phase (OPP). This is where the missile is given instructions, like where it’s going, when to make a turn, when to activate decoys, when to activate validation measures, etc. The second is the boost phase, (BP), in which the missile exits the tube and begins heading towards the target. The third phase is called the scanning or sprint phase (SP). During the SP, the missile is heading towards the target and is actively “Sprinting” towards the target. The last phase is called the Impact Phase (IP). In the IP, the missile either hits the target, or misses, and attempts to come around again to hit the target or explodes after running out of fuel.

ECV

ECV
Acronym

A vessel designed for EWar, or Electronic Warfare. An ECV’s Callsign in a formation is “Raspberry.” ECV stands for Electronic Countermeasures Vessel. ECV’s are completely defenseless, and always travel with companion vessels for Point Defense.

REV

REV
Acronym

REVs are Serniani’s primary mode of getting acquiring research from the field. They are called Research & Exploration Vessels. Most are unarmed and have escorts.

RCL

RCL
Acronym

RCL stands for Rapid Craft Launcher. Essentially, a giant railgun that fires out Spacecraft for their duties.

SDR Destroyers

Photo Credit: A Shelter Alliance Keystone Class Destroyer, Nebulous Fleet Command

Destroyers are the backbone of any good navy. Their relative size, capability, and capacity for brawling, missile spamming, screening, point defense, and their ability to host C2 (Command and Control) assets make destroyers excellent at leading smaller fleets, but they lack the “omph” (firepower) of larger classes, like Cruisers and Battlecruisers. However, trading a little bit of firepower for tactical flexibility is a good trade.

CCD-46A "Fluorite" Class

CCD-46A “Fluorite” Class

The Fluorite Class Destroyer is a dedicated C2 destroyer, with multiple command operations, enough equipment to set up a dedicated command post on a celestial body, and alot of CIPDS to boot. It also has several jamming arrays. The Fluorite Class was designed, and is constructed by Laswell Construction Yards.

ECV-23A "Nightshade" Class

ECV-23A “Nightshade” Class

The Nightshade Class, named for the poison common throughout Serniani Planets, is a ECV. Nightshade is common throughout the navy as the go to jamming ship, with defenses to boot. It is an area of denial ship, and is great at jamming communications, even up to the largest ships of a fleet. It’s known in the navy as the “Slow Killer,” since being unable to identify where the Nightshade in a formation is, and killing it before it flips it’s jammers on, can be the difference between life and death.

SDR Cruisers

Photo Credit: An Outer Systems Protectorate Navy Ocello Class Cruiser, Nebulous Fleet Command

Bigger ships, bigger scaling, better radars, better missile systems, additional reinforcements, stronger armor stronger everything. Cruisers are often found in Command and Control (C2), or are found with the “Omph” that destroyers and other smaller ships lack. Tactically, they fill a niche role, since they could easily be replaced with larger battlecruisers, or carriers. However, having two Cruisers over one battlecruiser gives more room to maneuver, and is a core part of Directorate Capital Ship Doctrine. Do note, operating a Cruiser by itself, is a death wish. Since they require constant support, be it screening, point defense, ELINT, SIGINT, or Ewar.

RCC-09 "Iridium" Class

RCC-09 “Iridium” Class

The Railgun Carrying Cruiser, better known as the Iridium Class, is a sniper or a brawler, really depending on the captain. You see, these are multi purpose 450mm Railguns. Some ammo is HE-FT, meaning that yes, you could destroy superluminal targets, given timing. Testing into micro Brightspace Drives and Railgun Munitions has also yielded small results, meaning that FTL Rounds is a capability.

ECV-91 "Vitreo" Class

ECV-91 “Vitreo” Class

ECV-91, or the Vitreo, is the dedicated EWar, ELINT, and SIGINT Cruiser. The etymology for the word Vitreo comes from the ship being glassy and helping to hide expression, which the word Vitreo means. In this context, the expression is other ships. The Vitreo Class Cruiser excels in masking the presence of other ships, but really isn’t good at fighting.

Lavenza, we’ve heard about the war. While we can’t produce warships legally, we can start refitting our Frontier Class and Venture Class Light Haulers to suit a “Lineshipesque” role in the blockade of ABH-003. While these ships are made to order, we’ve been able to order radars and other components off the shelf, meaning we aren’t bogging down your supply chains.

Alice Reach, a gun is a gun, no matter how old or deadly it is. We’ve had a case plan for this exact scenario. We’ve sent you the files on it and every other Freighter manufacturing station in the Directorate.

You’ve been assigned to a Lineship, a refitted Freighter. To keep the Directorate safe is a job that we wish you didn’t need to do. But now we must. We have run out of ships to give new enlistees, so you’ve been assigned to a Lineship. Just because you’ve served on a freighter before, doesn’t mean this time it’s the same. The Engines on these are huge, and without their heavy loads, can be pushed to speeds far faster than normal. Remember: Trust your ship, trust your crew. You’ll make it out alive.

Lineships

“This is a terrible idea. I love it.

- “Lavenza,” DNC Rapid Procurement Officer

Pressed into service at the start of the Enver War, the Lineships are a class of freighters tailored to the Directorate’s need for warships, fast. Instead of converting already created production lines, Directorate Procurement simply stuck guns onto the freighters and called it a day. You will find Lineships now a days sitting in orbit around any major wormhole, ready to fire at anything and everything that comes out of it. These ships are anything but slow, however. Due to them having oversized engines for dealing with heavy cargo loads, and the lack of cargo, these ships can push themselves at speeds even the fastest Corvettes can’t go.

LN-01 “Frontier” Pattern Heavy Hauler

The LN-01 Frontier Pattern Heavy Hauler is a Freighter Vessel pressed into service at the start of the Enver War. Quickly being refit with guns, missiles, and military radars, these ships were dispatched to the front in Atlia Reach and proved their worth by being able to hold Relays Hostage, not allowing incursion forces to pass through without suffering severe casualties, preventing crossings while allowing dedicated warships to operate within their actual roles.

Strike & Fleet Carriers

“Those [Carriers] were mothballed for a reason. Times change.”

- “Lavenza,” DNC Rapid Procurement Officer

Carriers, instead of having Starcraft as a secondary armament, are front and center in a Carrier. These ships are lightly armored, most of these construction being used for Starcraft Hangars, the rest being other important things (Damage Control, Command and Control, Reactors, Engines). These ships also allow for extreme flexibility, with open hangar spaces allowing almost any kind of Directorate Starcraft to operate off them.

CVG-029 Naginata Class Strike Carrier

CVG-029 Naginata Class Strike Carrier

The CVG-029 Naginata Class Strike Carrier is the newest carrier in the Rosecordi Naval Defense Forces. Built by Kronos Drive Yards, these ships are light, quick, and pack a serious punch. Trading already light shielding for excellent mobility, Naginata’s are built to weave into and out of combat, but lack a capability to rapidly recover Starcraft while under fire, unlike larger classes of Carriers.

Built initially by the Federation Drive Yards, these ships are Heavy, a little slower, but are harder to kill, as these things have amazing damage control. These ships can carry hundreds of starcraft, pattern and craft type dependent.

Hey Sayori. We’re heading out today. Pretty weird to have my mentor as a captain in the fleet I’m running, but it’s nice. We’ll be heading out the Verticia Periphery, so if there’s anything we gotta do before leaving port today, we can talk in person

Battlecruisers

“I remember boarding RNDFV Warden for a tour as a kid. Made me want to join the Defense Forces.”

- “Lavenza,” DNC Rapid Procurement Officer

The largest class of ships available to Directorate Forces. These ships are symbols of strength, and as such are kept in constant flux, and their presence is always classified until they’re discovered. These ships have great radars, tracking systems, fires, and some have hangars. Point Defenses are minimal, meaning that they always travel with a screening force, and are heavily reliant on Ewar from Corvettes and Frigates.

“Hey Director, the new ship pattern came through today. They call it the Short Range Medium Hauler. We affectionately call it ‘The Brick.’ It’s got shitty atmospherics, but it’s got a lot of internal space. The Drive and IFE is a bit scuffed on the pattern, so we’re thinking of double driving the thing at the expense of the reactor, which is more than capable of taking a second Drive. We’ve sent you the updated file. Go take a peak at it. We also threw a few guns onto it, cleaning micro meteors and all.”

“Engineering Lead, the double driving, I’m not sure about, but it seems like it fits within the constraints of what’s needed. Go ahead and make a few.”

Cargo Monitors

“This bad boy can fit so many Loitering Munitions.”

- “Lavenza,” DNC Rapid Procurement Officer, to Unknown

Cargo Monitor Pattern Vessels have been popular with shipping companies since forever. These ships are used to move unprocessed minerals across the sector. Some of these were pressed into service in the wake of the Enver war, when DNC needed space to employ thousands of mines. Rapidly retrofitted, these ships are actually quite nimble for it’s nickname, ‘The Brick.’

MN-0432 Horizon Pattern Cargo Monitor

MN-0432 Horizon Pattern Cargo Monitor

Originally a Cross Sector Light Hauler, these ships are pressed into service as Minelayers. Almost every HPCM is different, from space to reactor to drive to IFE. As such, the only real thing that makes HPCM in the same class is their purpose. Mine laying. These bad boys can carry thousands of mines. Operating in groups of three or four, they can make a system full of mines and booby trapped.
