Paris 2024: Olympics

The 2024 Olympics are being held in Paris up through August 10! You can find the official site here.

I don’t know enough about 90% of these sports to write some interesting ‘teaser,’ but for all of us tuning in… let’s discuss!

I saw these fancy graphics from the NYT on my TikTok FYP:

American commentators on the soccer football match against New Zealand are hilarious. First goal in 16 years? First win in 5,800+ days? They sound so excited, but somehow these numbers seem a bit embarrassing

I’m so baseball pilled this year. I was sad to see it’s not gonna be in Paris at all.

That Marchand swimmer from France is fast!

Can’t wait for soccer and track. I also missed Simone Biles this morning. Still have some time left to watch things.

I’m also enjoying surfing. It’s in Tahiti this year.

Today was a pretty wild day, track-wise.

The US Men 4x100 team needs to perfect its handoffs. I’ve watched those handoff issues unfold since 2008 and it’s about time we clean those up. Bednarek left too early and had to come to a halting stop to avoid leaving the exchange zone. The US wouldn’t have won but I guess that exchange was ruled invalid because it technically happened outside of the zone, resulting in the team’s disqualification. I’ve helped coach track at the high school level. While I’m a jumps coach, anyone can see those handoffs were messed up.

But then Sha’Carri Richardson cruises to gold after overcoming a deficit, so that checked out. That deficit came from a handoff again, but it wasn’t as bad as the Coleman-Bednarek mens one.

Also nice to see Rai Benjamin win gold after that upsetting 4x400 hurdles loss to the Norwegian guy. Anyone who can run a 400 well is impressive and then adding hurdles into the loop is even more impressive.

Oh my, a rant

China winning 7 of 7 gold medals in diving so far is insane. Amazing work

Think they’re going for the same in table tennis, it seems.

Edit: they did it!

The Athletic: “ Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Games gymnastics competition will be reallocated to Ana Bǎrbosu of Romania, the International Olympic Committee said in a statement Sunday, after a court ruling invalidated a correction to Chiles’ score that had put her on the podium.”

Seems like a tough situation for everyone involved. The Athletic didn’t mention it but the BBC’s article makes me wonder how things nearly could have gone the other way:

The Romanian Olympic Committee successfully appealed to Cas on the grounds the inquiry was “untimely” as it had been submitted four seconds after the one minute time limit.

Four seconds!

Completely forgot :man_facepalming:

I actually love the Winter Olympics too. Well it’s really just the skiing for me. That was my dream when I was younger, gold medalist in giant slalom!

Don’t forget the Paralympics:
