Operation Hornet Swarm | 0 BBT

The League Wars were over. Thanks to pressure from the Republic’s government and the war exhaustion on both sides finally forced the League and USPR to agree to a ceasefire and negotiate peace. Planets changed hands, prisoners and captured vessels were exchanged. Now that it was over, the Republic could focus on other problems.

Specifically, the Red Hand. A terrorist organization, advocating for human supremacy over the Republic. Any xeno, human deviating from the “standard“ or those showing any sign of active resistance were killed on the spot. This ideology, opposed to everything the Republic was founded on, stemmed from a belief that deterioration and weakening of the human race led to Envari domination and their enslavement. They wanted humans to dominate and for that every weak link and competing species had to go.

From a planet hidden deep in the Wild Territories they sent out operatives, creating networks in smaller settlements, recruiting to their cause and often usurping local leadership. The Republic nor any member states had a good way of tracking and detecting these networks. Until a weak link revealed itself.

An operative gave himself over to a Commando squad. He wanted to desert and had a likeminded collaborator on the Red Hand’s he base, Nova Terra. And he could get the Republic coorrdinates to that world.

“Which is why we have to do it.“ Andarna said, springing from her seat. “This is the best opportunity we’ve had. We can cut off the head of the snake instead of running after small cells. Decimate their leadership, supply chains and manpower pool with one strike. We have to take this chance.“

“Which is why I’m hesitant about it. We would be going in blindly based on what a guy told some other guy. And do you really think the Senate will agree to this. Especially as you want to specifically exclude their troops.“ And older human man on the other side of the table said, twisting his grey moustache. The Minister of Defense, Harvey, was often opposed to the political meddling within the military. It prevented it from doing what it should be doing and he often spoke about, not being as concerned about public image as the President would be. Andarna expected him to be more eager towards this. “Not to say the military side of this plan is quite… unconventional.“

“He is right Andarna. You are going in blindly into a perfect trap. Not to mention you have no idea about the planet or space around it, enemy military capability, supply lines or possibility of reinforcements. If your quick assault fails, you have no way of waging a long battle, even if you got supplies. You know Commandos aren’t meant for that kind of war.“ Dornan said. His impressive height, typical for Envari, and the equally rank of General was intimidating for many people. His more pragmatic and traditional doctrines often prevailed too.

Andarna, turned to the second Envari in the room, or rather the hologram of one. Marshall Hoxha, the only person outranking Andarna and Dornan, head of the Republic’s Armed Forces and architect behind the Rebellion’s officer training programs. He is responsible for the education 90% of Republic’s officers. “Back in the day you conducted operations similar to those of the Red Hand. And you saw me pull off operations magnitudes riskier than this one. Like Malevelon Creek. If I did that with a bunch of untrained volunteers and converted supply trucks I can do this with a Dreadnought and a Commando taskforce.“ Andarna insisted.

“We need to act fast. The prisoner refuses to speak before we agree on an operation against the Hand and we don’t know how long his contact on Nova Terra can last. This time we have no time for planning and a conventional battle.“ Hoxha said, the hologram flickering as he moved. He was still needed to deal with the troubles in the occupation zone and couldn’t be here in person. “The doctrine of taking out key targets with small Commando insertions isn’t new either, it’s all you two have been done for the past three years, just on a larger scale. Using new recruits to handle things here is a good idea, they could use some combat experience. Your plan is more thought out than meets the eye.“

“Thank you, but you know you can drop the formalities in private meetings.“ Andarna replied.

Everyone turned their gaze to the President Xanen. The Darkon stayed out of discussions up to this point. He was not a soldier, but a politician.

“What about the Senate?“ He finally asked.

“They can go fuck themselves.“ Andarna replied, seemingly handwaving the thought away. “The operation is small, outside of Republic territory and doesn’t require their troops. For once, they don’t get a say. I only need Hoxha, the Ministry and you.“

“In that case, I believe we heard enough. The plan us risky, but wasn’t the Rebellion which founded our state risky too? This is an opportunity to start acting and Andarna is the perfect person to do it.“ He said, in a tone that suggested the matter was settled. Hoxha was in agreement and the Minister was from the President’s circle.

An hour later Andarna exited the Ministrie’s meeting room to find Major Casey, her direct subordinate and good friend, waiting for her.

“So, how did it go?“ He asked.

“Pack your things and tell Yarrick to prep the Ravager. We leave tomorrow.“

The Ravager exited Interspace a bit distant from the given coordinates. The giantic grey and red Dreadnought slowly drifted towards the systems only habitable planet. It was good to be in Realspace again, even if it only were two days. Communication was now finally possible, unlike Interspace. There, news from home came only during few minute windows when the ships jumped Interspace pockets.

Andarna stood above a holographic display of the planet in front of them, made from what long range scans could pick up. She was clad in power armor, in the same grey and red as the ship. And just like the ship it was worn out, paint missing in many places, revealing the metal beneath or various cuts, holes and welds. The left half of her head was marked by a large burn. Because of this, her short blonde hair looked as if falling to the right side. Her blue eyes were narrowed and studied the hologram, cold and focused.

Across her sat Major Casey abd Admiral Yarrick. Casey was a tall human in green power armor, with similar signs of wear and tear to Andarna. He was bald and had a black tattoo of a skull on his face. Yarric was an Envari. A tall humanoid figure, with black eyes, breathing pipes on the side of his face and beige skin, wearing a blue and white navy uniform.

“Do we have any enemy vessels approaching?“ Andarna asked.

“No. And it worries me. There is no way we weren’t detected yet.“ With a ship this size hiding wasn’t an option, so he hoped to lure out any enemies before the ground assault begun.

“Our contact said there shouldn’t be any major defences around the system.“ Casey said. “Maybe he is more trustworthy than we thought.“

“Maybe. Either way, there is no point in waiting.“ Andarna said and turned on the ship’s internal comms. “We are approaching the target. Bridge crew, prepare short range scanners, I want you to get a detailed the moment we are in range. Divisions 1-40 and all squadrons prepare for deployment. Divisions 41-80 stand ready to go in the second wave. All other crew and Commandos to battlestations. We begin the assault in two hours, if you are late, you stay on the ship.“ Andarna’s voice was heard from speakers all across the ship.

The hangars were very busy. Hundreds of fighters, bombers and gunships were preparing to take off and thousands of Commandos were redying for the drop to the surface. The several hangars on the ship were filled with engine roar and loud conversations, mostly last minute readiness checks.

Many targets were identified: military installations, AA sites, shield generators, prisoner work camps, spaceports, industrial hubs and government buildings. Each of them would be either bombed or dealt with through Commando insertions. But Major Casey had a different mission. Extract the defector’s contact. According to intel he should be at a work camp in a city on the planet’s northern hemisphere, but nothing is ever sure in these operations.

His squad was already waiting for him. The one on the right of the trio was Horrigan, a three and a half meter tall Envari, considered tall even among other Envari Commandos. He was carrying a double barreled heavy machinegun. In the middle was Viro, a Talari who specialized in close quarters combat. His armor was covered in stickers and bright colored graffiti. Talari have an ability to electrify their fur as a defence mechanism, and so his armor had special modifications to allow him to electrify the armor’s surface. The last one was Aaro, a darkon. He was an expert marksman and scout. He often kept silent even when not trying to sneak up on his enemies.

“You got any extra info? All I know is that we will liberate some work camp. You know the General, she definately told you something.“ Viro asked, bursting with anticipation.

“I’ll tell you en route, we don’t have time right now. We have to get down ahead of the first wave.“ Casey answered, while Viro looked at him with increasing curiosity. It really was a special mission if the timeframe was this tight.

“As long as we get to kick some Red Hand asses.“ Horrigan said and walked into the gunship. Aaro picked up his rifle and followed, joined by the other two squad members.

The gunship took off with engine roar and before long it entered familiar turbulances caused by atmospheric entry. On the HUDs on each of the squad members a planet was shown. Similar to the Capitol, a world with blue oceans, green forests, yellow desserts and grey paches of industrial wasteland. It quickly zoomed in on a compound on the outskirts of a major city and showed a picture of a human. He was young, with light, smooth skin, light brown hair and dark eyes.

“This guy right here is our target. No, we are not meant to kill him.“ Casey quickly added before Viro could say anything. “He is a friend of our informant, getting him out was part of the deal. He is a maintenance guy at this labor camp. It’s through him that we got all the intel on this place. We have to liberate the prisoners and get this guy back to the Ravager.“

“What about the others?“ Aaro asked. Everybody turned to him in suprise and after a moment Casey replied.

“Heavy gunships will pick them up, this one isn’t big enough.“ The HUD display inside his helmet changed. “We are here guys, time to get off.“ He said as he pressed a button on the wall opening the gunship’s rear doors. Red lights begun flashing and the sirens mixed with the incoming wind. When the doors fully opened, they jumped out.
