Uncharted Space
20 Light Years beyond the Treecuu Volume

Along with many others, a large fleet of armed Galactyan exploratory vessels had been sent to uncharted areas of the Sector, beyond the known nations, to explore new volumes of space and discover new nations. So far, the expedition had discovered Alvira, a young nation in the Sector’s extreme west beyond Ferristia, and had brought forward Galactya’s first actual diplomatic relations with the Treecuu Star Empire, that for years had remained a mystery, despite being one of the Empire’s closest neighbors.

This fleet of vessels in particular was comprised of 20 Casfort Class vessels, each one spherical and 2.5 kilometers in diameter. After crossing the Zelvan Regime’s territories in Rainbowspace to avoid a diplomatic incident, an armed response or even worse, the breakout of a war (which, funnily enough, would come regardless some decades later), the exploratory fleet had reached a new, uncharted volume of space.

There they explored dozens of systems, sending probes and drones to scan and investigate stars, planets, moons and asteroids. Some swarms of droids were even left in the systems to build signalling stations, that would be able to highlight the already explored systems in new waves of exploration, as well as mark them for future colonization.

After exploring a binary red dwarf-brown dwarf system, the fleet entered Rainbowspace and again warped to it’s next destination.

Nick sat watching from the captain’s chair as planets flew by his squadron. He wasn’t sure how he had gotten this job–it, at first, seemed perfect. Not being thrown into the meat grinder was optimal for most people. Despite not wanting to die, he felt that he saw too little action. What’s the point of patrolling the border if nobody ever crosses it? At least, they don’t cross in front of him.

This system was like all of the rest of them. Sure, the star might have been a different color, and there were four planets instead of just one or two, but it was still pretty much the same. Devoid of life. That same darkness staring at him.

Of course, this was what he thought until he saw large black orbs appear far away from his squadron. He ordered his vessels to stop and assume defensive positions. After all, the vessels that criminals use get weirder every day to try and avoid detection. He didn’t want to risk anyone dying because he underestimated some sphere.

UNKNOWN VESSEL. THIS IS THE 76th SQUADRON OF THE TUSADU SPACE FORCE. PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY OR WE WILL BE FORCED TO TAKE ACTION.

76TH SQUADRON OF THE TUSADU SPACE FORCE, THIS IS THE EXPLORATORY FLEET “DREAMS FORTH” HAILING FROM THE GALACTYAN EMPIRE. WE ARE SORRY TO HAVE TRESPASSED INTO YOUR TERRITORY, BUT WE WEREN’T AWARE THAT THIS VOLUME OF SPACE WAS ALREADY COLONIZED BY XENOSAPIENTS. THE PRIME OBJECTIVE OF THIS FLEET IS TO EXPLORE THE AREAS OF THE SECTOR NOT YET CHARTED BY THE EMPIRE: THEREFORE, WE HAVE NO HOSTILE INTENTIONS.

After hearing the message, then replaying it again five more times just to make sure that what he heard was actually what was broadcast, Nick sat in disbelief. What he had wanted to say was something more along the lines of “Let’s get going, we’re gonna ride this out!” but instead the only sound that was able to escape from his mouth was a very quiet “oh.” He supposed the only thing he could do now was keep them occupied until the government did whatever the government does in first contact situations. After he sent out the first contact signal to pretty much every single military base in Texas, he broadcast a message again to the “Galactyans”:

I SEE. WE HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A NATION NAMED GALACTYA. COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PLACE YOU COME FROM?

He figured that would work for now, and sat back, waiting for their next response.

It would probably be a while.
