Alright guys, apparently there was a report that someone could gain access to the site servers, and then it got breached. So Max and his team has to completely rebuild from that.
What The Heck Happened
Sometimes people find bugs or vulnerabilities in NationStates code, and report these to us. For example, in the past people have discovered a method to get more Trading Cards than you’re supposed to, or cause the server to choke under heavy load. We fix the problem, and the reporter gets a Bug Hunter badge.
Today, a person reported a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain server access. This is a serious bug, and the first time something like this has been reported in the site’s history. We’re grateful for the report. Unfortunately, the reporter didn’t merely confirm the bug’s existence, but also then went ahead and breached the server.
Because there was unauthorized entry to the server, the only way to be sure it’s secure is to completely hose it and rebuild. We also need to determine what material was accessed or copied off the server. This will likely take at least a few days.
