Apologies if this comes off as a bit gruff, but… Why? What goals are you trying to achieve that justifies a complete scrap and rewrite? I feel like we need a bit more context here?

My guess is that the goal is to put in a Question of the Day and announcements blurbs, which we don’t have right now. I think it’s a good goal and would be supportive of figuring out a way to make both of these things work. Whether it requires a full rewrite or not (and whether or not this counts as a full rewrite) is up for debate.

A few thoughts I have:

  • This draft gets rid of the radio feature we’ve had in the WFE for a long time. I’ve never paid much attention to it, but that’s because I’m a weirdo who doesn’t much like music. Is this something other people are actively paying attention to? I know Delegates do seem to take time and care to actually utilize it.
  • After “forums”, all 5 links go to the same Dispatch. Why not just have one link to the Dispatch?
    • Similarly, I don’t think each of these things really requires a verb before it (especially since three of them use the same verb: ‘join’). Reducing those extra verbs would give us more characters for QotD + announcements.
    • Personally, I’d cut it to two links: one for the Welcome/Get Involved Dispatch and one for the Get Involved Wizard. This will save characters and be cleaner.
  • “Join the World Assembly and endorse the Delegate and Coral Guard” is featured twice as is joining the Discord and forum (once near the top and the other in the “New? Start here” section).
  • Why remove the link to the TSP Wiki? Curious what RP people think about this since I know that’s the group of people who mostly use that resource.
  • I like the idea of a QotD, but I don’t think it needs to have its own nation. It’s plenty fine for whoever posts the QotD to have their own RMB post linked. Extra nations = extra maintenance work and confusion with maintaining logins.

The purpose of this is to make things like citizenship and joining the executive apparent to new members by actually putting it in the WFE, to make room for a question of the day, and to add an announcements section. Most of those we can’t fit in without redesigning the WFE’s formatting and structure entirely.

I’m generally of the opinion that we’d be better off using the space for something else. It takes up a lot of the character count, doesn’t generate much discussion, and doesn’t feel like it contributes that much to culture.

The reason there are 5 links is because I want to have each of those presented on the WFE as a thing people can join. They’re all linking to the same dispatch because everything kind of goes to the same space, either that dispatch or the wizard. I didn’t put the wizard because the dispatch has better info, especially regarding the Assembly which isn’t on the wizard. A link to the wizard though should be in the WFE, that’s an oversight on my part.

Also the “Join the Executive” is currently meant to link to a section of the dispatch that does not currently exist, and we are working on making. making it is independent of the WFE redesign as it is necessary regardless.

It was mostly because it felt like that could use emphasis, but I’m completely flexible on how/where that should be displayed.

The nation itself I didn’t necessarily intend to use to post the question of the day, mostly just to use the quote bubble to format the QoD and have a nice label for it as part of the quote box. We can always link the post to whoever is posting the QoD (assuming we post it to the RMB, we don’t need to, but its probably a good idea to) without needing to change the nation. If we’re not going to use the nation for a quote bubble in the WFE, then I’d want to scrap the quote bubble formatting for the QoD in the WFE entirely, as the nation name still contributes to the character count.

I think if we did this, “Join the Executive” would be best off phrased differently, such as using Government instead. A good way to cut down on character count though.

A few initial thoughts:

  • It needs a bit more colour. The gradient design of the “Welcome to The South Pacific” in the current WFE is quite nice, and I think it should be retained here. I also think the vertical dividing lines and bullet points should either be black or orange, to contrast with all the blue.
  • The big space between the “Welcome” bit and the rest is a little strange; I think just another horizontal line would look better.
  • The first line of links is too long; the awkward splitting of the “Join Roleplay” link into two lines looks clunky. Removing the “Join the Executive” link, or else the Discord and forums links (since they’re listed below, anyway) are probably the best ways to fix it.
  • I agree with HS that a lot of this is redundant, and taking-up characters unnecessarily. There don’t need to be multiple links to the same places. The most obvious ones are, first: the two repetitions of join the WA and endorse people in the “New? Start Here” section. If we want to keep the SWAN one, then at the very least, the join the WA and endorse the delegate and coral guard bit should definitely go, since it’s already said above. And second: “Connect with us on our Discord and forums”. I think it would be best to remove that one, rather than the direct links, so we can save on character count.
  • By saving on characters with the above suggestions, we should be able to keep the link to the TSP Wiki and NS Dial. On the NS dial, specifically: I thoroughly enjoy it, most recent delegates have seemingly enjoyed it, and pretty much everyone who has their submission chosen gets excited by it. Additionally, it displays a little bit of TSP’s character and “status” as a fun party region. The “land of lampshades and llamas” bit in the current WFE also does that, but I understand if it’s not possible to keep both. I’m also sure we could come-up with a way to shorten it a bit from as it’s currently written.
  • I’m unsure of the need to post the full question of the day in the WFE; why not save some space (and characters) by simply putting-in a link to that day’s RMB post? If we do that, we could likely save both the “llamas and lampshades” bit and the NS Dial.

As a design choice, I’m not sure centering everything is helpful. Centering a bulleted list in particular feels awkward to read.

The question of the day will either be made by the Pollmaster, the culture groups, or some other structure to be set up.

It’s not centered unless you’re on mobile as that’s how mobile formats tables

I have made an update to the WFE, but have not gotten around to changing everything.

Changes:

  • Replaced the “New? Start Here:” line with “Things to Do:”
  • Replaced the “Join the WA and endo the del and CG” bullet with a QotD bullet which has a link to post a response to it (but does not outright say the QotD, is also not super easy to read in the response quote until you preview)
  • Changed the color of the link directory lines
  • Removed verbs from the first directory line
  • Added a wiki link to the second directory line
  • Swapped “Join the Assembly” and “Join the Executive” for a “Government”
  • Added 87.7 on the NS Dial back into the WFE
  • Added “- Land of Llamas and Lampshades” into the top line of the WFE along with some palm tree emojis, might need to add a ‘the’ in there tho
  • removed the QotD quote section
  • Removed everything except for the two bulleted sections from the main table and added some [hr]s in. Main table was converted from noheader to plain.
  • Added announcement placeholders

To-Do:

  • Alter directory line links to better places / alter what directory line options there are
  • Add in a link to the getting involved wizard
  • Remove “Connect with us on our Discord and Forums” from the bulleted section
  • Make the headers of the bulleted sections into links
  • Add links for NS Dial
  • Messed with the spacing/sizing of the first line
  • put NS Dial in a better place/format it better

When not on mobile, tables allow the two bulleted sections to be side by side and I’m not sure I want to give that up.

Thanks for continuing to work on this!

A few notes that I have:

  • I don’t really see the need/motivation for changing the starting line + NS Dial format in the WFE. The brighter color and larger text + different palm tree position in the current WFE looks better.
  • I do like the new Discord | Forums etc. link bar. I think I would like it better in the light blue color than this new darker blue.
  • Is there a reason we got rid of the general “New to the South Pacific? See dispatch” line in the WFE? I like linking to that Dispatch as a general “new members go here” item
  • I very much like the Question of the Day link feature
  • I might prefer the current links to RP info > the SPIT in Lampshade Bar and Grill text that you swapped it for
