Food Discussion: All Things Cooking

What if you put corn in a hot dog bun?

Corn is great but I find the corn here in the US is usually too sweet for my tastes.

I don’t know why you’d put corn inside a hot dog bun though. Corn dogs exist and they’re great! Korean corn dogs (or at least what this place near me claims to be Korean) with potato chunks on the outside are my favorite. But admittedly insofar as this is about cooking, I have no idea how to make them

The Midwestern obsession with corn is…interesting to say the least. They go a bit overboard.

New England, especially the RI/Mass. Farm Coast, has really good summer corn (if you like it sweet). I’ve been spoiled with Farm Coast corn that whenever I have a drier and less-sweeter cob, I don’t find it as appealing.

Asian pizza with corn always strikes me as odd, but I haven’t been there for ages so I can’t remember how it tastes now. :man_shrugging:

I had pizza with corn on it earlier today and indeed, I think it’s odd. The texture’s kinda weird because of the corn and the corn itself didn’t lend much flavor because the sauce and the cheese overpowered it. It was very popular though and most people had no problems eating it

Fixing to try this recipe when I get back home. Need to figure out cookware though. . .

Is anyone else unable to open the link or am I just cursed?

No it seems like I’m cursed too.

Must be some sort of broken link

Not skilled enough to make a meaningful contribution but look at this mean grilled cheese sandwich I just made:

The secret is butter!

Oops, my bad. Link fixed.

God’s greatest sandwich. Give me that and a tall glass of SPIT please.

Two hot-ish takes here:

  • Gumbo is a hit-or-miss dish. I’ve had some darn good gumbo and some…not too great gumbo.
  • Grilled cheese is a no-no! I’m Lactose intolerant so I’ve learned how to cook (and eat) around cheese. I’ve cooked some grilled cheeses before and yes, that’s right: butter is always your friend!

I needed to bring the cooking of NOLA home with me, so I’m fixing to try that recipe and a few others in a book I picked up there.

New poll!

Many countries and cultures have very distinct cuisines. There’s too many to put in one poll, but what’s that one cuisine you’re always craving?

  • Japanese food
  • Mexican food
  • AMERICAN FOOD! :us:
  • Chinese food
  • Indian food
  • German food mit ein bier
  • Cuban food…or any Caribbean style
  • Any Middle Eastern/North African cuisine
  • Ethiopian food
  • Italian food
  • Thai food
  • Other (tell us below!)

Chinese of course, by way of ethnicity.

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but there’s a difference between American Chinese food and regulat Chinese food.

I’ve never had real Chinese food. I’m used to American Chinese styles and although it’s not too healthy, it can be a lifesaver for dinner. I used to live a block away from a Chinese restaurant and man, after a long day of work that was Perfect!

I don’t really have a preference for one cuisine over another. If it tastes good, I’m gonna stuff my mouth with it.

I’d also like to point out how underrated American food is.

We literally have everything from chicken and waffles, East Texas brisket, lobster rolls, New York pizzas, chile stews, to Western steaks and everything in between.

But we don’t talk about the Midwest.

Understood

Food is good. But after a tiring day at work, I’ll take some chicken with mixed vegetables and hunan sauce over a French dish.

It’s all about what and how you feel.

If you live anywhere with a sufficiently large Chinese community I think you can find pretty decent “authentic” Chinese food.
