Cadihest
Dominion of Region Lithesia

The life of a Chambermaster was not an exciting one, but nonetheless an important one. It was ultimately the Chambermaster who decided who would be granted the privilege of using their gate, and to tip their balanced hand out of your favor was to add dreaded hours upon your trip. A Chambermaster would often receive courteous bows wherever they may go.
It was on this particular day, as Chambermaster Exatha was negotiating a particularly hefty movement of fleet personal, that one of her servitors intruded into her office. Her annoyance at the interruption quickly fell away to concern as the two exchanged a brief flash of lights, increasing in intensity as it went on. Then, as quickly as they had entered, the servitor left. Exatha hastened to one of the many panels lining the room, and filled with dread as she saw the warnings were indeed true. Somewhere in those unexplored regions of space, a portal had just connected to the system.

Velvet Marine Corps Research & Operations Base “Katelyn Violet” is a massive and sprawling facility in orbit of an anomalous gate. They had recently powered the gate, opening it to another somewhere outside the SDVR. VMCROB Katelyn Violet had called for an exploration Task Force. Chihiro Zephyr’s Task Force Green was assigned and had arrived.

“We are preparing probes, stand by.”

“Contact, out of the gate.”

“Hey Chihiro, got a contact, you see it?.”

“Scan Tech, you see anything?”

“One contact exiting the gate.”

“One spotted, it’s all you for first contact.”

“On it.”

A probe ship was a quaint little thing, the product of a society with too much time on its hands and an intense disdain for dealing with Chambermasters. It was thus that the Machinist found himself manning one, sitting upon the threshold of the Antechamber. Understandably, the military had not been thrilled to find their passage postponed, and so it was with great urgency that he was supposed to solve the problem. He didn’t see why they couldn’t have sent an Artificer in that case, but the call was not his to make. The Postillion piloting the ship was polite, so at any rate it was a pleasant journey thus far.
Unfortunately, the pleasantries had to end. As soon as the probe began picking signs of an actual foreign presence, any hopes of a cosmic coincidence were dashed. With great disappointment, he allowed his suit to sober him up, and re-read the readings. The new gate was not of TwAs design, the scans showed that, but it could reasonably be inferred to be of Old Kind base. There were what could be inferred to be ships in proximity to the gate, and a larger structure remaining around it as well. The Machinist began moving the probe to focus its attention on the structure.
He paused. There was a signal coming in over the line; they were communicating with the probe. Was he authorized to grant them a response? He turned to the Postillion, who nodded after a brief pause. They stood up, stretching, and took a seat at the console next to him. Between the two of them, and an ai more accurately described as a content filter, they had the unenviable job of transmitting messages to and from the aliens over nothing but light waves, which they seemingly didn’t communicate with. Of course, the language had to be cracked first. He supposed it woo late to worry about epilepsy.
