I’m comfortable committing to a year if the Assembly wishes that. If there is concern about going all the way for a first-term Chair, which is a fair point, a shorter time would sound reasonable to me as well.
I believe a three month term is ideal, aligning with the term of the Prime Minister. That has also been the duration set in the prior two resolutions. In this instance, extending it to four and a half months is reasonable, given that only a month and a half remains of the current term. However, I cannot support a resolution setting the term any longer than that.
I concur with Erstavik. We can always extend it when we get there.
Then I would say let’s end Kris’ first term at the end of the next PM term. That would be the end of April. From there, we can discuss a longer term.
As a general reminder: The Assembly is independent of the Executive and can (and should) set its presiding officers independent of other elections ![]()
I believe that Kris’s first term should complete the remainder of Welly’s term.
Welly’s term would have expired on the first of January.
I support a term ending April 1. There is only one and a half months left in my original term, which really isn’t sufficient time to get much of substance done. And from a practical standpoint, attempting to hold an election over the holiday season might be challenging in terms of sufficient activity and engagement.
But that opens a whole different question. When someone is appointed mid-term, do we arbitrarily change the rules to ‘give someone a chance’ or do we say, no, you get the same chance everyone else gets, your term ends in January and you may stand again if you wish?
That question isn’t really applicable here. Kringle wasn’t appointed mid-term. Nwahs was. If Nwahs were seeking to continue in the Chair, then it might be fair to argue that he should simply serve the remainder of my term and then stand for reelection. But the Assembly has instead proposed vacating the Chair and electing someone—in this case Kringle—to an entirely new term. It’s not clear why that new term should be tied to the length of mine.
It’s also not clear why it should change. Once again, it’s an arbitrary change. I say we decide the Chair has a set term and it does NOT change on a whim.
You also named Nwahs Deputy Chair and then Nwahs called themself Chair and Deputy as they wished and it was actually never clear at any time if they were appointed Chair or not and so, actually, you have muddied your own waters here and it is not actually clear if Kris is Nwahs’ successor or yours.
Nwahs was a temporary Chair who openly stated they didn’t want to be a permanent chair.
This is an excellent point that we have moved past. Let this term end March 1, so we are not running an executive election and a legislative “election” simultaneous.
I will note that legally-mandated retention votes for appointed office-holders are also scheduled for March.
I’m in favor of ending the term on January 1st
cries in retention votes
Lets do end of February then ![]()
I support ending the current term in February.
I continue to believe that a four and a half month term is the most appropriate length in this case. However, given that multiple term lengths have been proposed and we have not reached a consensus, I now introduce several competing resolutions, each reflecting the various term lengths discussed, to be voted on as competing resolutions in accordance with § 1(6) of the Legislative Procedure Act.
Apologies for the formatting. I tried to organize the resolutions into collapsible sections using the “details” function, but I wasn’t able to get it to work.

Second, I move that no additional debate time be required for the competing resolutions, as they are materially identical to the original resolution.
Third, I move that we proceed to a vote on the resolutions.
I second that we proceed to vote🥀
Based on my reading of the debate, I am not of the view that “multiple competing bills or resolutions” have actually come about as a result of this debate. There are multiple lengths of term that have been put forward, but not all of them need to be put to vote, unless they reflect actual divisions in current views amongst legislators.
The motion and second for four resolutions to be concurrently put to vote is hereby denied by the Chair. I recommend that legislators motion and/or second a specific resolution that they wish to see put to vote. If there are still strong views one way or another on different dates, competing motioned/seconded resolutions will be put to a concurrent vote.
In that case I move that we proceed to a vote on the original revised resolution.
