[2535.AB] Amendments to the Elections Act (Campaign and Voting Periods)

If that’s the concern, couldn’t they simply opt not to seek re-election? I don’t think term limits are necessary for the delegate’s wellbeing.

They could but the unexpected arises for everyone at one point or another and it may well be something they didn’t foresee happening at the start of the term, with a wellbeing approach, we reduce, significantly, the potential for mid-term resignations.

Think about it, most of us top our duties as Legislators, we can apply for LoAs with little or no impact. When elected offices apply for LoAs, we are spending the period of that LoA without the elected person exercising their duties.

I move that we proceed to a vote on the amendments.

Sorry that I missed this earlier, but I think that we should not use “the first round of Delegate Elections” and “the election” interchangeably. The proposed amendment refers to conducting “the election” in three phases, when it should refer to conducting the first round of the election in three phases.

I know it’s pedantic but I also happen to know from experience that it’s mattered before.

I take this point. Candidly, I think it is relatively unlikely to cause an issue, as the potentially ambiguous mention of “the election” occurs in a sub-section below a section referring to “the first round of Delegate elections.” So it seems clearly to be referring to the procedure for the first round. Nevertheless, once this vote is concluded, I plan to bring forward legislation to fix this issue as well as present other potential changes to the Elections Act.

I am in support of this proposal

I realize I am late to the party, but I disagree with voting on both term limits and changes to campaign/voting periods in the same bill. These are two fundamentally different ideas/changes and people might have very different opinions on each of them.

To clarify, the changes to the term limit provisions were stylistic only. The limits that were imposed by 2506.AB were retained. This bill simply split those limits out into separate sub-sections and tweaked the language slightly for greater clarity. It did not impose, change, or remove any term limits.
