The Inflection Point - The Breaching of the Territories

Princess Lirien kept quiet untill now. She was assessing the room. Diverse was a understatement when describing the delegations. The sector was full of all political orientations and directions possible it seemed. Some of them, like the confluence, ware a threat. Others yet showed great promise as future allies.

She finally spoke:
“Delegates, friends, we have just begun to discuss this future political platform and we are already talking about exclusion. I understand the fear of foreign states with different political views governing our decisions, but if we continue like that we will leave for our homes empty handed, or worse, with more enemies than we came with. My suggestion is that for now to avoid before mentioned issues we do not give this body any powers outside of the wormhole system. That way no one imposes their will on anyone. And with time, as our trust in each other grows, we can expand the capabilities of it via a simple two thirds vote.”

She stops to drink a glass of water. Fuineth takes the opening to speak.

“And regarding the defense of the system, while a joint fleet is a good idea, we can go further. Calerost, because of the mirial wormhole, has great experience in wormhole traffic infrastructure and defense. For more than a thousand years our commercial FTL travel has been reliant on the mirial wormhole, through which thousands of ships pass every minute, for fast transport from our core to further regions. We have developed incredibly advanced system to manage all of that traffic. I am without doubt that the emperor would be willing to lend our experience in creating a complex around the wormhole. The plans and mechanisms would be open to all members, of course, but the complex itself in my opinion should be governed by the Zahamana Commonwealth for they are the host nation of the wormhole.”

From their circle, the Aquilan delegations nodded their head in agreement. With discussions only beginning barely an hour ago and things have taken a much more hostile tone than most delegates perhaps intended.

The Prince Royal fixes his glove before speaking, “If I may interject, your Majesty. Would this mean that relations between individual realms or polities from within the Territories with those outside of it would not be subjected to any sort of special treatment, regulation, or observation from the wider sector, and would instead be a matter of bilateral diplomacy between the polities in question?”

High Admiral Rhakarrax observed the many delegates as they arrived, greeting the King Zolahon. The diplomatic summit was one of diversity beyond the wildest imaginations of the Osprians. While their dominion held many weird animals, it was the first any Osprian ever joined such company, except perhaps those of the Palladic Order.
“Your Majesty,” Rhakarrax started immediately after the King’s open inquiry, “I entrust You with the right judgement to initiate contact with the Tiyankian realms, but what about sovereignty? I do not intend to question the territorial claims of your end of the wormhole, but will the Tiyankians agree so such measures? Will You aim to control both ends of it? We have no formal nor legal system to adhere by. Either way, the Osprian Timarchy will support Your proprietary claim on this side of the wormhole.”
Soon after, the other delegates began their questions as well. The way it devolved into technicalities was concerning. Before even understanding one another, they sought conflict without understanding the fundamentals of stately relations. A feather, after all, is useless without bone.
“Fellow delegates, please consider this. How can we delve into discussing technicalities on interstellar relations without first understanding each other’s culture? We are doomed in an endless cycle of self-indulgent rhetoric if we don’t take the time to understand one another. I would advise that we give multilateralism a chance through whatever form an interstellar forum may take. The only important aspect that matters right now is that in such a system, all star nations must be equal. One nation, one vote. Failure to uphold that, will only lead to an unsustainable framework. Without it… I fear any attempt of establishing peaceful interstellar relations will devolve into petty wars. Conflicts will exasperate until it will only leave the Timarchy chronicling history in your blood. I ask to you all, to cement your deeds in honour and focus on the bigger picture, for honour is not decorum alone, but the brightness of one’s soul.”

King Zolahon spoke again. The immediate hostility was concerning, but cooler heads seemed to be able to prevail- for now.

“it is a fair point to ask. The situation on the other side of the wormhole is tenable. It appears to be in a sort of dead space that isn’t directly controlled by any specific polity. A couple seem to claim the region around it, but they have been willing to engage in diplomacy. They understand that the wormhole is as much a security concern for them as it is us. Most likely, we would allow Tiyanki states to contribute to patrols on their side of the wormhole, although we would still make up the bulk of the forces. The diplomatic efforts on the other side are also being conducted by the Prime Minister, and to my knowledge they are going well.”

“Yes, exactly. We will not treat the states within the Territories in any special manner. From our limited knowledge, they would likely object to such measures anyways. Even after hearing of the size of our nation, they did not seem to be in much fear of the potential of invasion, and seemed more interested in potential trade. To them, our markets are huge, after all.”

He paused for a second before continuing.

“I would, however, bring one caveat: this wormhole should never be used for direct invasion, unless there is an existential threat to the Territories or the Sector originating there. If the wormhole is used for military operations, it becomes a liability to certain nations, and therefore a target, which potentially risks attacks on it. An attack on the wormhole could be catastrophic for any personnel that work there, on both sides, and would compromise the interests of every nation that has attended this meeting.”

“Calerost’s expertise on this matter would be very useful. We are very new to dealing with wormholes, although our scientists are working around the clock. This would alleviate any potential time pressure if there turns out to be hostile polities on the other side of the wormhole.”

He then turned to address all of the delegations.

“I open the floor to any remaining questions and concerns. If there are none, and you believe your states to be able to sign a treaty with the stipulations we have discussed here, I would be pleased to begin drafting one. I will not, of course, require a signature now, and revisions can be made in the future, but I would like to get a working draft before we leave here.”

King Zolahon avoided the urge to lean back. This meeting had not been quite as stressful as it could have been, with the first impression of the hundred thousand ships in Zahamanan space and the open bickering between delegations- even if it felt like it had dragged on. Things were so far proceeding smoothly, and if there were no wrenches thrown in, this would be one of the most succesful days in Zahamanan history.

As no delegates appeared to have additional statements to make, the writers began drafting the document. As it finished, the king started to read it out for one final pass.

“Article 1, section 1. All signatories of this treaty consent to the establishment of a jointly operated base around the Wormhole, henceforth classified as TIY-01, for the purposes of tr-”

At this moment, every delegate’s escort, in varying levels of distress, report massive amounts of ship signatures. When the reports finalized, many of the Zahamanan couriers looked on in shock. 175,000 ships had moved, cloaked, through Zahamanan space. They were ships of the Dokavian Grand Amassment.

Communications came in. “Hello, Esteemed members of the Sector,” the commander said.

“I am the Dossa ex Kixvek, the leader of the esteemed Kixveks who are vassals of the Grand Amasser. We recieved word that there was a large gathering of star nations around this wormhole, which we figured out led to the ‘Tiyanki Territories’ due to internal intelligence.” The Dossa let that one hang for a second.

"We feel… insulted. While our stay in this sector is temporary, we believe that we should be treated with the same respect as a permanent nation. We desire direct access to the Territories as well. Whatever agreement you are coming too, we want a place in it.

If we are outright refused… the Amasser will certainly not be pleased. Most of the other Dossas are in agreement, too. We may have to retaliate if such an unfortunate situation were to come to pass."

The Dossa let the Delegates and the Zahamanans respond.

“By the gods…”
“Shit, that’s a fleet and a half”

The Calerostan representatives looked at the transmission. 175 thousand ships appeared out of nowhere. Cloaking tech like that was hard to even imagine. This seemed like it was on the level of the Ogmarim.

“Lîrien to Mithon, i do not think i need to explain the situation to you. Prepare the spotlight protocol. Deploy if hell breaks loose or i give the sign earlier. Understood?”

“Understood. I am also raising security to yellow alert.”

“Reasonable. Let’s go, Fui, we need to go to Penma”
“And the rest of the covenant?”
“They’ll go to find her too.”

The two representatives left their spots and quickly moved to the Imperö of Trianar. The centuries long allies ware prepared for scenarios like this, but a course of action needed to be chosen first.

“Your Excellency, I don’t think i need to explain anything to you here. We need to choose how to act. I think our best bet is to convince the assembly to allow the Dokvians to join in. We are outnumbered and outgunned. Any hostile action would be a death wish. And if the others decide to act with hostility, i have armed spotlight. This is a battle we can not win, and even trying is foolish.”

Penma listened to the reports, and assesed the odds. There were only 10,000 Zahamanan ships, meaning that they were outnumbered by around 65,000. Dokavian ships were also no joke, from what she knew- befitting for a people entirely dependent on them. Even the Trianarö would have trouble dealing with them.

This battle could be winnable. Trianar had won battles with worse odds in its history.

As she began to speak, the Södin by her side spoke. “With all due respect, Las Impêras, I agree with our allies. These ships are not all under joint command. If it were just members of the Covenant, here, we could stand a chance at holding until reinforcements came, but our nations are not used to fighting alongside each other. The Dokavians know this, and they will use it to their advantage. Please forgive me for speaking out of turn.”

Penma paused. She was right. The actual chances of victory were far lower than even pure numbers would suggest. To charge headfirst into battle, even noble battle against these demons, was foolish.

“You are right, Rava. There is no honor in defeat. And do not be afraid to speak. You are here to learn, and here to advise.”

She addressed the Edhel.

“I do not particularly like Spotlight, but it is a necessity. I agree. If the Dokavians want in so badly, we will let them in, and we will monitor them until no end. We are not yet in a place where we can easily destroy them.”

She then addressed the other delegates at large.

“Delegates, I believe that the safest course of action is to give the Dokavians what they want. The truth of the matter is that victory in this battle is not assured, and any war caused by this event would devastate the Sector and especially Zahamana. I would not like to be the one who brings a state who so graciously thinks of the health of the Sector to ruin. I do not like the Dokavians any more than any other person in this room- I would like nothing more but to see my forces destroying their Grand Amasser and vesting these vile creatures from the Sector. But a certain level of pragmatism must be reached in these matters. This, unfortunately, is the pragmatic option.”

The lone Treecuu stood up. Her posture projected calm and confidence. Special Emissary Teemas addressed the delegates.

“Such a large number of ships is clearly meant as an intimidation. The Treecuu does not take kindly to such acts. Demand that they withdraw half of them, then invite them here.”

Her imposing gaze moved from delegate to delegate while talking.

“Do not let them scare you, fellow delegates. If they engage us in combat here, there will be no wormhole left for them to use.”

She glanced at her wrist device that had buzzed. A priority notification had been received. Her ship, the Remote Fleets’ Ship Tircane was maneuvering toward the wormhole, assuming a nonchalant defensive posture.

The ship’s intent was left vague for the moment.

Among the general shock of the other delegates, the ambassadors of the Confluence began to technotelepathically communicate with one another in rapid succession, to plan their course of action as fast as possible.

At the same time, on the other side of the direct communications channel with the diplomatic and military hierarchies that had been opened before the start of the conference, the vast digital minds of the Confluence conversed on the situation, on how to instruct the team to proceed, and on what future measures may be taken to ensure that the Dokavian threat be permanently eliminated.

“Well, that certainly complicates things. How do we want to go about responding?”

“Do we know how big of a threat the Amassment would be to the Confluence in its current state, excluding proper wartime footing?”

“Our scans and observation arrays do show that they possess a remarkably large naval force, as well as considerable military capabilities.”

Regardless of that, we cannot afford to start a war today. I doubt our Radiant Lady would much enjoy having to coordinate another one right after the Otmoonan situation.”

“I do think we should follow Emissary Teemas’ step. Not an aggressive stance, but a defensive one that cannot be used as a casus belli by any remotely reasonable culture.”

“And besides, nobody in the Confluence would agree with succumbing to direct military intimidation. Aside from tarnishing our image, it would also give birth to a very dangerous precedent.”

“Indeed: it seems reasonable enough. Would it be possible to ask the Garden Of The Father for confirmation?”

"Yes, I can send a message. Speaking of which, there is an incoming message by the Beginning of Breaths. It seems that the Habship has received direct instruction by the High Botanists to follow the Tircane’s lead and relocate closer to the wormhole.

“And much like it followed, it appears that we will follow too: the Garden is instructing us to proceed with this course of action.”

“Very well then. Let us relay this to the rest of the delegates. Perhaps we will be able to inspire the more uncertain hearts here present to follow our lead.”

In accordance with the other ambassadors Aariiveeshooaaa, with symbiodrones flying high in a cloud above their main trunk to propagate their chorus-like voice further, began to calmly relay the position of the coempireal delegates on the issue.

“We delegates of the Confluence agree with Special Emissary Teemas, and similarly demand that at least half of their currently-present fleet relocate within Dokavian territory. Then, and only then, should we allow them to join our talks. Otherwise, by indulding their aggressiveness, we would only be giving the chance for a very dangerous precedent to arise: though our civilizations may all have their considerable differences, I think we can all agree that any dispute in the Sector ought to be settled with diplomacy and mediation, rather than intimidation and violence.”

“How long would a task from 1st Strike take?”

"1st Strike is Maiago, so… Twelve hours to weapons employment, eight hours to impact if we can keep them in sensor with a good enough track so they don’t use fallback seekers and stage on a civvie or something stupid. "

“That’s far too long.”

“You’re telling me ma’am. Nearest voidsea presence is… Fuck, probably Perdonsk, and they’re Syndicate.”

“I mean, their khan is here, probably not happy if she’d be dead right?”

“They’d just appoint a new khan. Not worth losing our pride or dignity dealing with the devils.”

“Well that’s rude.”

“Excuse me, the adults are talking.”

“I hate to admit it, they’ve probably got the right idea. Tell Commodore Otarin to get a message back to Sivenfier. They’ll bring us up to REDCON I.”

“And.. Somebody get eyes on their ships. We’ll need analysis down the line.”

“The delegate from Vandalence agrees with the point raised by the Imperö, the Special Emissary, and the- the Diplomats of the Confluence. As of now, I see no other way out of this condition other than by agreeing to their terms, for now.”

As standard policy, groups of ‘Satyr’ Early Warning Craft, ‘Pixie’ Light Fighters, and ‘Siren’ Electronic Warfare Fighters were conducting intersystem reconnaissance when the Amassment Armada jumped into the system. Unsure if the amassment noticed the groups, craft-borne intelligence officers would make it a point to create as much data on these potentially hostile ships as possible before either being destroyed or forced to return on bingo fuel.

The Intelligence Analysts on CNV Spire of Flames were thrown for a loop on the arrival on the Dokavian Armada. In the following minutes, catalogues of information would come through from the Satyr pickets. Entire ships were cut down into photos, their weapon systems, strike craft, external mountings, drive signatures, drive plumes, emissions of all kinds, nearly anything and everything was put into the databases before being sent off to Vandalence, where a larger group of analysts were waiting to decode the secrets.

HIMS Denvaria SD-08
Grand Admiral Erik Danvirson, Imperial Navy

At his age, there weren’t many things that surprised Grand Admiral Danvirson anymore, but this was certainly a new one for the books.

“There are how many ships currently cloaked in system?!” Danvirson wasn’t one to yell, but this was a special exception. After all, when was the last time you have 175,000 Cloaked Ships suddenly appear on Anti-Cloak Sensors this close to this many ships.

“Sir, We checked over and over again, each time confirmed about 175,000 Vessels currently cloaked.”

“And just how in the name of the Maker did it take this long for us to notice them approaching, they should’ve shown on long range AC Sensors!” The Denvaria, being the Imperial Flagship, had some of the best Radar and Sensor Systems in the entire Imperial Navy only second to dedicated EW Ships. Furthermore, this wasn’t exactly the first time Denvaria had seen Cloaking Tech, both Vulkan and Chr’Kahr had the tech, and by extension, so did Denvaria, even if limited to testing vessels and the Prowlers of Imperial Intelligence. But the Imperial Navy, in theory (it would be hard to tell if any other navy present had access to Anti-Cloak Sensors), should’ve been able to spot them way earlier, so why didn’t they?

“Sir, if I may, but there is a high probability that these ships have Cloaking Technology so advanced that they may have been able to hide themselves from our long and medium range sensors, only appearing when they approached our short range sensors, where it is far easier to detect.” The Science Officer, a Vulkan, theorized.

Whatever retort the Grand Admiral had was cut short by the simple, automated alert over the CIC’s Speaker’s.

WARNING, SHIPS DECLOAKING, RANGE: CLOSE

“Move us to Tactical Alert Yellow immeadiately and notify the Emperor.” Was the Grand Admiral’s sole response.

“Sir Yes Sir!” Was the general response that came.

Emperor Edward V of Denvaria

Things had been going rather well until now, when mere moments before everyone else began reporting massive amounts of ships, the Emperor had been warned of the enemy Armada that had all but shown up both out of nowhere, but clearly uninvited. Opinions of these ‘Dokavians’ further soured for the Denvarian’s after their demands and show of intimidation.

Because this had been seen before, when the Empire first made contact with the Chr’Kahr, when the Chr’Kahr murdered 32 diplomats and destroyed 2 Imperial Ships. It was that incident that not only started the war against the Chr’Kahr, but drove the Empire into isolation afterwards due to fears of other Starnations being just as barbaric as the Chr’Kahr. Clearly, this summit had largely done away with the fear that the rest of the sector was like the Chr’Kahr, but clearly there were still the exceptions to the rule, and the Dokavian’s were one of them. However, while Imperial Policy was clear regarding nations like these, the Dokavian’s had 140,000 more warships than the Imperial Fleet, and at maximum speed, Reinforcements from the Empire would be hours, if not days away. True an argument could be made that the Imperial Fleet may outgun the Dokavians, but ROE would be clear that firing first would make the Denvarian’s out to be as warmongerer’s, something the Emperor nor the Empire as a whole didn’t want, no, the Empire would have to wait for Dokavia to fire first.

Still, this was a bad sign of possible things to come, and the possibility still existed that the Dokavian’s would still just open fire regardless. Thus…

“Send Priority Zero Message to WarCom, Condition Alpha Echo is in effect.” The Emperor said to one of the Communication Specialists of the Imperial Guard contingent they had brought with them. Said Specialist’s Eye’s widened upon hearing the Emperor. Priority Zero had only been called a handful of times in Imperial History, and Condition Alpha Echo had last been in effect during the Chr’Kahr Conquest. The Specialist merely nodded and began contacting Warfare Command.

“The delegate of the Empire of Denvaria agrees with all current statements made by the other delegates. However, the Empire will make it known that we do not tolerate Intimidation of any kind, and will respond in kind should this go FUBAR.”

The delegation from Auren turned to each other. Things were once again turning away from the Ascendency’s hopes for the sector, and these issues seemed to be getting harder to resolve.
[My lord Baron, this is all going astray before it has even begun. You must do something]
[I thank you for your reminder, Alchemist, but those thanks shall soon run out if you continue on this path of folly. I have not risen to the chambers of the Lexia Corthos by inexperience and incompetence]
[Our appologies, my lord. Our Alchemic orders are not… structured like the confederated government is, and my partner is used to having to spur on his protegés. Perhaps it was a mistake for us to have been sent]
The Baron huffed and turned to the other Alchemist. There was an element of truth to her words, although it would be a mistake to take anything she said at face value. And, after all, it was hardly a true slight. It was only that Mathis had lived too long in Drellun to properly trust any of them, and he was not prepared to give them any ground on this matter. [This sector seems predestined for war. We have seen the fleets our sibling delegations bring with them. We have seen the grievences they bring with them. And now, as a consequence of both we face a diplomatic crisis before anything of proper note has taken place. You two, head back to the ship and prepare a message for the worst case scenario. We must ensure that should the sector come to blows our gifts to the King do not fall into the wrong hands. I shall handle things here]. Both Alchemists bowed their heads in difference before turning to depart, undoubtedly communicating with the internal light panels Alchemic pairs were known to posses. It was now Baron Mathis’s turn to address the room, and perhaps overreach in the process.
|As ambassador for the Twilight Ascendancy I support a plan of diplomacy instead of escalation, although I’m sure some will find that quaint given I did not come with a fleet of ships at my side. I would be remiss to not recognize that many of you must have been given cause in your histories to come prepared, but this only highlights my growing fear of conflict within this sector. We have talked about exclusions, we have talked about rotating defensive duties, but in these ideas I only so the threat of political maneuvering and escalation. The arrival of the Grand Amassment has strengthened my belief that any organization for the management of the wormhole should be separate from any sector congress we may conjure, or else the safety of the Zahamanna Commonwealth and the Tiyanki Territories will be endangered by any further conflicts that arise in the wake of our newfound awareness of each other. Furthermore this incident has convinced me the wormhole, or perhaps even Zahamanna itself, should remain free of foreign military vessels. Instead let the sector come together in the creation of permanent defensive platforms. We can eliminate the ability for intimidation or displays of power in defensive fleets while also ensuring that no one star nation will hold an advantage over the others around the wormhole|

“Who these Dokavians think they are? To barge in with a fleet and expect a seat at a diplomatic meeting! Only Zoltan would do something like that!” Victoria exclaimed in a tone making it sound like the Dokavian action was a personal insult.

“They were excluded from the conference, seemingly the only nation that was treated this way. It was a major diplomatic insult. We should at least give them benefit of the doubt, at least until we learn more.” Zeno said in a concilliatory tone.

“They are basically holding a gun to our head. We don’t have another choice but to let them in. I doubt any other fleets here would be willing to attempt a suicidal battle. Especially if they claim they got more ships.” Nikita said, in a calm, profesionnal tone.

“Thank you all for your inputs. Wheter the Dokavians deserve to be on this meeting doesn’t matter now. Given the military they got here, for the sake of the Republic’s safety, there is no point antagonizing them. As long as they don’t become outright hostile, we can maintain a policy of diplomatic openness. Though the prsence of a ‘vassal’ is concerning. We will warn the Liberator and the Republic.” Gelen cut off the discussions from the other delegates’ private discussion. He then turned to speak to the rest of the assembly. “As the representative of the Republic, I agree with the other representatives. It would be pointless to pick a fight the Dokavians. As long as they don’t pursue any directly hostile actions, they should be allowed to partake in this meeting, just like any other state. While peacuful relation are alaays our goal, the Republic is ready to fight in its defence if necessary.”

After listening to the delegates, the king gestured to create silence.

“I am in agreement. Whether we like it or not, the Dokavians are a presence in this sector. I would not have this diplomatic meeting be marred by the deaths of any delegates here.”

He looked to the Twilia.
“I would not be opposed to such measures, but as it stands, we will have to proceed with the procedures we have created. Later amendments can come at a later date.”

After a moment of Zahamanan defense ministry members scrambling, a message was sent to the Dokavians.

“Remove half of your fleet. A Zahamanan force will shadow you until you have left our territory. After this has begun, I will send you the current state of the treaty, and if you find it acceptable, we will allow you to be a signatory.”

After a tense moment, and after warp bubbles signified the leaving of the contingent, a Dokavian response came through.

“We find these terms acceptable, for now. The Amasser will sign your treaty. Thank you for your cooperation.”

The rest of the Dokavian ships started leaving through sleek warp bubbles, as suddenly as they appeared. They did not seem to care to stay for a signing ceremony.

After this mixup, King Zolahon overlooked the delegations after they finished re-reading the final draft of the initial treaty.

“I thank you for coming here today. Do not let our unexpected visitors bring the mood down. This is a monumental achievement for the Sector. Let us hope that the Sector remains in peace and cooperation for all time to come.”

(OOC: If you have any final closing statements to make, you can make them. Otherwise, the RP is done. Sorry for the long timeframe, and thank you for bearing with me over the pauses)
