‘UNITY ABOVE ALL’ : THE 175TH UNION DAY

President Trenton attending ‘Trooping the Colour’ ceremony.

President Trenton gave a galvanizing speech this morning, during the flag hoisting ceremony of Livana’s 175th Union Day. On this occasion, the President pressed the importance of unity, solidarity, and comradery, citing the tumultuous political period that the country is currently going through. ‘… Change is always hard. Someone’s mettle is always tested with change, how much they can salvage their own identity and sense of self through traumatic, and even tragic transformation. Through this, change shapes history. It defines humanity’s capacity to adapt and to overcome through any situations. And this is how Livana is founded. We are united through a violent revolution, through bloody wars. We survived through a Great War, through a Civil War, and through massive unrests. These changes is what define Livana today. A resolute people, hardheaded at times, defying turbulence with confidence, united through changes. These qualities are the very definition of our mettle. Thus, this nation will survive and thrive through these testing times under one condition: unity above all.’

PEOPLE’S VOICE: UNLOCKING LIVANA’S HISTORICAL POTENTIAL
Run-down medieval fortresses, old and ghostly churches, neglected battlefields, these are what adventurous tourists and locals could spot deep in the interior of the Isles. These ancient structures, some even dating back to the Tolossan times, have been neglected for centuries, as the government and private investors pour their money to shining skyscrapers and new industrial complexes. Although these desolated structures have been fueling Livana’s naturalist and romanticist arts since the 18th century, there are still larger potentials that can be unlocked through maintaining and restoring them. This is what Professor Dalerius Johnson of the History and Archeology Department of the Livonia State University are currently focusing on.

‘This site was once a center of local trade and commerce. The Counts and Countesses of Macomer was once a very wealthy subject of Arcana. The family even invested into several of Arcana’s expedition to Zholtiya. You can’t guess that now looking at this rubble,’ stated the Professor as we visited his team doing restoration works in Blasius Castle, near Macomer, Valera County, North Liv. ‘Imagine the amount of tourists and history nerds that this site would bring! I bet this castle can operate on its own, and even bring a hefty profit for those who runs them. But the most important thing is always the story that each places could tell. Reading book is good for tests, but experiencing history yourself is entirely on a whole new level of studying.’ The Professor had given a proposal to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to grant funding towards the restoration of historic places, hoping the economic potential could bring in new investors to help safe Livana’s history. In Blasius, his restoration works was still funded by the University and partially by his own money. But the professor is hopeful that soon a renewal program could begin. ‘A great man once said, a great nation is the one that does not forget their history. I hope the government would heed this saying and join our cause.’

RAWSON DYKE DISMISSED, THE GENERAL STAFF UNDER INVESTIGATION

Ministry of Defense Building in Livonia Citadel.

President Trenton announced that he had dismissed the Chief of Staff of the Livanan Military, Brigadier General Rawson Dyke after the revelation of a corruption scandal involving the General and several defense contractor in Livana. The revelation was made following a ‘time and motion’ inquiry made by the Finance Ministry two months ago as part of the Fiscal Reform Package to reduce Livanan government’s massive expenditure. The inquiry discovered inconsistency within the General Staff, and alerted the Livanan Anti-corruption Commission which finished their first stage investigation this morning and published a warrant for the Chief of the General Staff. The Commission is still undergoing a more thorough investigation within the entire Defense Ministry, but has announced that the corruption can only implicates the ‘previous government’. The Former Minister of Defense during former PM Alston’s premiership has been called to questioning.

OIL RIG INSTALLATION COMPLETED, LIVANA EXPECTED TO GAIN WINDFALL
Ministry of Energy and Industry announced the completion of the Varana Oil Field with the installation of the final two oil rigs. The field is expected to produce 2,000 barrel of oil, ready to be refined in the expanded Varana Refineries. The project, helped by investments through the CMEC, is expected to provide more than 20,000 increase in employment opportunities across the city of Varana, and Cinis as a whole, and would bring windfall for Livana’s economy, currently suffering from a debt crisis. Finance Ministry welcomed this boon, but still maintained that the reform will continue. “We must not fall to the traps of a Rentier State,” announced Minister Markus Longinus.

PEOPLE’S VOICE: THE DARK HISTORY OF LAKE TRINE
“This once was my grandmother’s house.” said Drenton citizen, Marius Manton, pointing to the depth of Lake Trine. Marius’ family is one of the many thousands evicted by the government during the construction of the Tarsis Dam. The Lake is now the biggest freshwater body in Livana, providing electricity to a quarter of Livonia, and irrigation to farmers across South Liv. The project was seen as the gleaming legacy of the Colonel, and was still referred by those who still have conviction towards the deceased former president. However, as Marius is showing us as he took us in his tour boat, this project hid a darker side. “The government official came in the night, told the local district head that our village will need to be emptied in a week. They gave each family 500 Feras, and leave. My Grandmother was lucky, she was able to move into her sister’s house in Drenton. A lot of her neighbors became homeless, or have to live in dilapidated social housing.” continue to 30 years-old tour guide.

Marius’ family now lives in Drenton in a humble but peaceful life, however Marius told us that several homeless stragglers in Drenton were the direct result of the eviction, and that “sometimes my Grandma would notice some of them and tried to help them with a few Feras.” What happened in Lake Trine is a testament to the uglier facts of development and progress. In the times of Colonel Tarsis, repression allowed the government to hush dissents and pushed forward massive programs that benefitted millions. And now, as the government is rushing into development and economic expansion, we call them to heed the warnings of Tarsis’ repressive past, and to look at the picture of development more holistically. Let us not disenfranchised any members of Livanan society anymore, and lift them all up to prosperity with equality and egalitarianism in mind.

ARCHPRIEST PROMISES TRANSPARENCY AMIDST CORRUPTION COMMISSION INQUIRY

Archpriest Felix III addressing the press in Cathedral Square, Livonia

The Livanan Corruption Commission has began a series of public inquiries and investigation towards the Church’s financial management. The Corruption Commission has found several inconsistencies relating to the Church’s accounting procedure, and had secured a warrant from the Livonia City Court last week to began investigation. Several Church properties has been audited, including the Hiron Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saints. The Archpriest, His Holiness Felix III pledged total transparency with the Commission and the public, and promised that ‘…swift actions will be taken…’ to keep the Church’s accountability in the eyes of its adherents.

The Rationalist Church, the biggest religious organization in Livana, and one of the biggest in the entirety of Pacifica, has been under public pressure due to accusation of mismanagement and even misuse of public tithe for non-charity and non-religious purposes. The rumors began following a lone protester’s vandalism of the statues within the Cathedral of Saints, claiming that much of the funds promised for orphanages in Northern Liv never reached the intended receivers. The Church’s very close relationship with the government is under scrutiny as well, with members of the opposition coalition demanding further commitment from the government towards separation of church and state.

STORM SEASON HIT LIVANA
Ministry of Interior and the Department of National Resilience announced increased level of danger throughout the Confederacy as spring storm season hits the nation. The government had published set of recommendations to the general public, imploring cautiousness and readiness in case of emergency, such as flooding and strong wind. Cities and Counties across the nation are installing sand bags and temporary infrastructure to prevent major harm towards life and properties and manage the potential damage that this season could potentially bring.

PEOPLE’S VOICE: OUR PAST IN HIRON
Piers Volgen, NP Cultural Correspondent - "Today is a landmark day for Livanan tourism and cultural richness… " opened President Peter Trenton in the Hiron Open-air Museum opening on August 29th, 2024. The occasion, attended by the President, the Minister of Education and Culture, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and many stakeholders around the ancient site of Hiron, marked one of the biggest government investment into the area yet. Almost one hundred million Feras was invested in the construction of the new museum, as well for accessibility enhancements throughout the site. Many welcome this investment, and hopes that the new Hiron would be a centre for tourism and became one of South Liv’s economic lynchpin.

Others are more skeptical about the project, including the Lucius-Onderon Preservation Foundation Speaker, Leanna Abercromby. “We need to tread careful in inviting tourists into such historic sites…” stated the Speaker. “Many structures are already fragile and flimsy to begin with, and just a tiny bit of stress could potentially harm this magnificent edifices permanently.” Mrs. Abercromby stated that her foundation has had several meeting with the Museum curator and the government contractor, and is disappointed that they only gave her vague promises. “It is good that the government wishes to showcase our history more, but it is imperative that these objects be treated as delicately as possible, so that our children and grandchildrens could experience and learn from them for generations to come.”

ARCHPRIEST FELIX III ANNOUNCED RESIGNATION, PRESIDENT TO APPOINT NEW ARCHPRIEST

High Priest Lucius Ebonhard of Varana in 2024 Day of Saints Mass, considered to be the most likely successor of Felix III

Following the revelation of mass corruption and embezzlement of public dowries in the hand of the Rationalist Church, specifically in the Northeast Diet under the direct control of Archpriest Felix III, the Archpriest has announced his resignation in order to prevent ‘… conflict of interest …’ as stated in his resignation speech in front of the other Four High Priests of the Rationalist Church in Livana this morning. Calls for resignation has been strong amongst the public, and the Anti Corruption Commission themselves has deemed the resignation of the Archpriest as ‘necessary’ for a proper and unbiased investigation to go on.

As Constitutionally ordained, and sanctioned by the Rationalis 2123 of 1889, the Archpriest of Livana is to be filled by one of the High Priest of the Five Diets of Livana, appointed by the authority of the President. President Trenton would now need to fill in the position of High Priest for the Northeastern Diet, and afterwards, the ultimate decision of selecting the next Archpriest. High Priest Lucius Ebonhard has been the most well-regarded and popular amongst the other high-ranking leaders of the Church, and is generally considered to be Felix III successor throughout the latter’s tenure. But the President can also choose from the other three High Priests, or named his own Archpriest from the candidate that he choose for the Northeastern Diet. The faithful are now watching and praying for the Citadel to came up with the right choice.

PARTS OF THE RIVIERA FLOODED, TOURISTS EVACUATED
As Storm Eleanor hits Livana’s eastern shores hard, the Ministry of Interior has announced robust emergency plans to defend most of Livana’s tourist centers. Sixteen hotels were forced to close, and their patrons are to be moved to a safer location inlands. Most of these hotels are in the vicinity of the Guspini Municipality. The Mayor of Guspini, Aloysius Flinchberg, has stated that the Marina Guild and the Government will jointly cover all losses suffered by businesses in the area throughout this storm season. Beyond this measures, the Municipality has reinforced the sandbag protections across the town’s harbour and near vital locations, such as St. Eugenie Hospital and Amber Lyson Highschool which would also acts as emergency shelter.

PEOPLE’S VOICE: MOVING WITH NATURE
Edgar Ambrosius, NP Environmental Correspondent - “You didn’t see things like that here, in Cinis,” said Cinis and Aften’s Head of Environmental Protection Department, Claudia Olson, when we asked her about the storm damages inflicted on Southern and Northern Liv. Mrs. Olson has been a vocal voice against over-development and overtourism in Livana. She was formerly the Deputy-Chairman of the Cinis National Park Trust, and was one of the biggest critics towards the expansion of the island’s ring road that encroach upon the national park’s boundaries which sparked a considerable protests nationwide two years ago. Ever since, she has been adamant on supporting a risk-free and sustainable development planning in the island.

“For years, us Cinaians has known that we can’t built in certain areas, and thus now, we are save from the repercussions of defying mother nature,” continued the Head of the Environmental Protection Department. “We cannot work against the nature, we shouldn’t bite off the hands that feeds us. Now, the Riviera and Arcana must face billions worth of damages every year, not to mention the potential costs of human life. The governments needs a more hands-on approach in planning developments in these regions.”

DEATH TOLL RISE TO SIX, MACDONALD: MORE RESOURCES IS NEEDED FOR FUTURE STORM SEASONS

Damages being cleaned in the Marina Harbour of Arton, Verdius County, 21 April 2025

Storm Eleanor’s death toll has been raised to six, as two more bodies were discovered off the coast of Torinus and Verdius Counties. The two bodies, identified as 56-years old Tarnius Robertson and 71-years old Emerin Pamela, both Figari residents, thought to be flunged to the ocean by strong wind. The storm has been one of the more destructive ones in recent years, and since the beginning of the storm season this autumn, the destructions has cost an estimated ₣3 to ₣5 billion. The storm season is calming down, and will dissipate this winter, however emergency status will remain until the damages has been assessed completely, and most missing person have been accounted for.

Minister of Interior, Tilda MacDonald (Lib) applauded the works of the emergency services, and promised pay bonuses for the three months of the storm season in a speech in front of the Citadel. She shared her condolences to the families of the deceased, and emphasize the needs for "… increased resources, stricter protocols, and targeted socialisation of said protocols amongst the general populace… ". The Minister has announced her plans for a revamped Storm Readiness Bill, which will include flexible emergency accounts for funding disaster reliefs and equipment upgrades.

MARINA GUILD POOLED ₣1 BILLION FOR REPAIRS AROUND THE RIVIERA
The Livanan Riviera has been hit hard with storms this past season, and though no lives has been lost in the region, the damage has been quite substantial. To that end, the Marina Guild representatives has created an emergency fund pool for urgent repairs throughout the storm season. The pool will fund critical infrastructure repairs, such as damaged bridges, embankments, roads, utilities such as electric cable and gas pipes, and also public facilities such as bus stops and parks. The pool is expected to expedite the recover of the region on-time before tourist season hit on June and July.

PEOPLE’S VOICE: LIVANA’S AGING COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE
Ellen Serotonius, NP Defense and Security Correspondent - “The flexibility and agility of a professional force is really the core of modern warfare,” said Third Deputy Minister of Defence, Ret. Gen. Hereford Wakes in our interview last week in the Defense Ministry. The retired, 76-years old General has been the most vocal voices within the Ministry of Defense and the Military on ending conscriptions for good, and investing in a professional core force. The idea has been gaining traction amongst the military for some times, but “… the doctrine of numbers are much more comprehensible and logical than the more subtle doctrine of training,” as the Deputy Minister said. He has planned to create a renewed career path within the military, which will allow sufficient amount of ground troops, whilst allowing a flexibility in promotions and sufficient openings within the officer corps. “The Academy will have to take the brunt, but this will be the best investment the military has put into, I say,” continued Mr. Wakes.

Livana currently employs a one-year compulsory military service mandate for Livanan biological males between the age of 17 to 30. The conscription system is rotational and randomized, meaning each year, conscript will be taken from different states, and random birth dates to determine which part of the population will participate are produced in a state-wide announcements. This means not all males will have to participate in compulsory training. Everyone conscripted will be given official leave from the government, and those who are already employed, will be guaranteed return, whilst their employers are given compensations in the form of tax deductions. Throughout their service, they receive the income of the lowest Commissioned Officer’s pay. This system has been praised by many as the backbone of Livana’s defence system, however the immense upkeep has been criticized from time to time. The current Liberal government has been one of the staunchest voices in imposing efficiency on the military, and Mr. Wakes’s proposal might eventually be a reality sometimes in the near future.
