‘UNITY ABOVE ALL’ : THE 175TH UNION DAY

President Trenton attending ‘Trooping the Colour’ ceremony.

President Trenton gave a galvanizing speech this morning, during the flag hoisting ceremony of Livana’s 175th Union Day. On this occasion, the President pressed the importance of unity, solidarity, and comradery, citing the tumultuous political period that the country is currently going through. ‘… Change is always hard. Someone’s mettle is always tested with change, how much they can salvage their own identity and sense of self through traumatic, and even tragic transformation. Through this, change shapes history. It defines humanity’s capacity to adapt and to overcome through any situations. And this is how Livana is founded. We are united through a violent revolution, through bloody wars. We survived through a Great War, through a Civil War, and through massive unrests. These changes is what define Livana today. A resolute people, hardheaded at times, defying turbulence with confidence, united through changes. These qualities are the very definition of our mettle. Thus, this nation will survive and thrive through these testing times under one condition: unity above all.’

PEOPLE’S VOICE: UNLOCKING LIVANA’S HISTORICAL POTENTIAL
Run-down medieval fortresses, old and ghostly churches, neglected battlefields, these are what adventurous tourists and locals could spot deep in the interior of the Isles. These ancient structures, some even dating back to the Tolossan times, have been neglected for centuries, as the government and private investors pour their money to shining skyscrapers and new industrial complexes. Although these desolated structures have been fueling Livana’s naturalist and romanticist arts since the 18th century, there are still larger potentials that can be unlocked through maintaining and restoring them. This is what Professor Dalerius Johnson of the History and Archeology Department of the Livonia State University are currently focusing on.

‘This site was once a center of local trade and commerce. The Counts and Countesses of Macomer was once a very wealthy subject of Arcana. The family even invested into several of Arcana’s expedition to Zholtiya. You can’t guess that now looking at this rubble,’ stated the Professor as we visited his team doing restoration works in Blasius Castle, near Macomer, Valera County, North Liv. ‘Imagine the amount of tourists and history nerds that this site would bring! I bet this castle can operate on its own, and even bring a hefty profit for those who runs them. But the most important thing is always the story that each places could tell. Reading book is good for tests, but experiencing history yourself is entirely on a whole new level of studying.’ The Professor had given a proposal to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to grant funding towards the restoration of historic places, hoping the economic potential could bring in new investors to help safe Livana’s history. In Blasius, his restoration works was still funded by the University and partially by his own money. But the professor is hopeful that soon a renewal program could begin. ‘A great man once said, a great nation is the one that does not forget their history. I hope the government would heed this saying and join our cause.’

RAWSON DYKE DISMISSED, THE GENERAL STAFF UNDER INVESTIGATION

Ministry of Defense Building in Livonia Citadel.

President Trenton announced that he had dismissed the Chief of Staff of the Livanan Military, Brigadier General Rawson Dyke after the revelation of a corruption scandal involving the General and several defense contractor in Livana. The revelation was made following a ‘time and motion’ inquiry made by the Finance Ministry two months ago as part of the Fiscal Reform Package to reduce Livanan government’s massive expenditure. The inquiry discovered inconsistency within the General Staff, and alerted the Livanan Anti-corruption Commission which finished their first stage investigation this morning and published a warrant for the Chief of the General Staff. The Commission is still undergoing a more thorough investigation within the entire Defense Ministry, but has announced that the corruption can only implicates the ‘previous government’. The Former Minister of Defense during former PM Alston’s premiership has been called to questioning.

OIL RIG INSTALLATION COMPLETED, LIVANA EXPECTED TO GAIN WINDFALL
Ministry of Energy and Industry announced the completion of the Varana Oil Field with the installation of the final two oil rigs. The field is expected to produce 2,000 barrel of oil, ready to be refined in the expanded Varana Refineries. The project, helped by investments through the CMEC, is expected to provide more than 20,000 increase in employment opportunities across the city of Varana, and Cinis as a whole, and would bring windfall for Livana’s economy, currently suffering from a debt crisis. Finance Ministry welcomed this boon, but still maintained that the reform will continue. “We must not fall to the traps of a Rentier State,” announced Minister Markus Longinus.

PEOPLE’S VOICE: THE DARK HISTORY OF LAKE TRINE
“This once was my grandmother’s house.” said Drenton citizen, Marius Manton, pointing to the depth of Lake Trine. Marius’ family is one of the many thousands evicted by the government during the construction of the Tarsis Dam. The Lake is now the biggest freshwater body in Livana, providing electricity to a quarter of Livonia, and irrigation to farmers across South Liv. The project was seen as the gleaming legacy of the Colonel, and was still referred by those who still have conviction towards the deceased former president. However, as Marius is showing us as he took us in his tour boat, this project hid a darker side. “The government official came in the night, told the local district head that our village will need to be emptied in a week. They gave each family 500 Feras, and leave. My Grandmother was lucky, she was able to move into her sister’s house in Drenton. A lot of her neighbors became homeless, or have to live in dilapidated social housing.” continue to 30 years-old tour guide.

Marius’ family now lives in Drenton in a humble but peaceful life, however Marius told us that several homeless stragglers in Drenton were the direct result of the eviction, and that “sometimes my Grandma would notice some of them and tried to help them with a few Feras.” What happened in Lake Trine is a testament to the uglier facts of development and progress. In the times of Colonel Tarsis, repression allowed the government to hush dissents and pushed forward massive programs that benefitted millions. And now, as the government is rushing into development and economic expansion, we call them to heed the warnings of Tarsis’ repressive past, and to look at the picture of development more holistically. Let us not disenfranchised any members of Livanan society anymore, and lift them all up to prosperity with equality and egalitarianism in mind.
