PEOPLE’S VOICE: IT’S TIME FOR AN APOLITICAL PRESIDENT
Arminius Veltorn, NP Political Correspondent - After the drama that engulfed Livana’s central government in the past two months, Livana is once more under the leadership of the Liberal Party, after almost eight years of domination by the People’s Coalition. The negotiation for the new cabinet was not easy either; it took PM Raleigh almost three weeks to distribute the ministerial postings. However, the new Forward Coalition has to share place with President Peter Trenton, a member of the Workers and Labours Party. And awkward proposition at best, but the President has not put himself as a threat and is still playing along with the new government, approving Raleigh’s confirmation as Prime Minister, as well as approving his choices of ministers.

Perhaps it is time to make the position of President as apolitical as possible. Livana has been a proud Parliamentary Republic since the fall of Colonel Tarsis, and the President, with all his privileges and theoretical powers, has been restricted to affairs of national defense and security. An apolitical head of state would serve these responsibility far better than a political one, given that his/her allegiance would only be to the state and the people, neither for the party nor for political advantage. Given that Livana already has a neutral apolitical legislative body, the College of Seers, it would not be a big change to shift the candidacy process for the presidency from the political parties of the College of Representatives to the College of Seers, which would procure apolitical candidates for the people to vote. Through this, the current awkward arrangement would have been avoidable.
