Megastructure Limit Discussion (OOC)

Ah good, I was starting to get anxious with there being all that free land with no one to control it

Remember everyone, the vote will be closing tomorrow, so you all should make sure to have put your votes in by then! ^^

Also sorry about having closed the vote too soon earlier lol, hadnā€™t really thought about it

If we need even more time I can extend the vote for a couple of extra days

Well everyone hold your horsesā€¦ Since when does this community expect everyone to make up their minds immediately when somebody calls for it? Or even assume everyone to be online every day? Heck youā€™re lucky I even am online at all as I planned to chill out and only got online because of spare time. I would go as far as call such behaviour pretty toxic as it implies we need to check this everyday or the rules might change without our say. A commitment too large to demand for a spare-time hobby!
Need I also remind this community that a large portion of us are dealing with school, work, university & internships at the moment? I feel like at least a week is needed to grant everyone enough time to let opinions simmer. Arguably possibly even two weeks due to the important nature. The A1-0 community is big and busy. So please allow us to think reasonably about such impactful choices and not on whims. Hell, the Qwert hasnā€™t cast out his vote. If this becomes the norm, A1-0 will change canon too easily and not have an anchor to rely on.

For once I will actually say to follow the example of Gameside and give people enough time to vote. TSP laws arenā€™t voted on by rapidfire votes with sporadic attendants. Even Pacifica gives a week or so to vote on the World Forum for that reason.

Additionally, I even feel there was still room for discussion. I myself donā€™t see the point in already making the differentiation with megastructures made with exotic materials when the classifications havenā€™t been properly discussed. To me it currently feels like I donā€™t truly comprehend the choices I can vote for. Like what megastructures use extoic material and what is to be considered exotic? Iā€™d like to get a clear input from the community at large

I also feel like there are different semantics at play here. Perhaps we were indeed a bit too hasty about the term megastructure with the original rule. For example, I donā€™t believe we included large artificial planetary rings in those, because they arenā€™t quite yet mega-size for a sci-fi setting. Possibly weā€™re dealing with preconceived notions from Stellaris or other places without realising if weā€™re speaking about the same things at all. Like Robbyā€™s motive is to add the original planetary rings for Pelinai which I probably wouldnā€™t even classify as a megastructure. The whole Dyson Swarm discussion in itself is proof of the existence of these different semantics.

Overall, Iā€™m also a bit sad no one voiced my concerns earlier and we all so eagerly jumped to vote because of peer pressure. If I was in a worse mood, Iā€™d probably call out the organiser for subverting the democratic process for putting limitations and steering this debate into their own interests. So please, be a bit more critical when weā€™re discussing drastic changes to the nature of this canon. Well-thought-out rules are what keeps this canon balanced and fun.

I will therefore refuse to vote in this poll until the following criteria are met:

  • Clear & realistic timeframe for all members of the community to participate in given RL priorities.
  • A consensus on when we agree to vote and how. Which as far as Iā€™m concerned didnā€™t happen here with the entirety of the community and was steamrolled by a select few.
  • The majority of the community agrees on the terminology needed to make an informed vote instead of assuming we all agree on the same definition.

This vote feels way too rushed and not thought-out for the drastic implications it tackles. I will end my statement that we must adhere to the US Navy SEALā€™s motto: Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!

I have some issue with your aditude towards this whole situation. In the eyes of some members, you made a mistake. Nothing said in my eyes was a personal attack against you. It was all constructive criticism for you. If nobody informs you of the mistakes you make, youā€™ll just keep making them until the end of time. Iā€™m going to respectfully ask you to calm down and reassess the situation, because none of this was made to offend you- and frankly, it was doing you a favor.

As the maker of this thread does not want to continue operating it, it seems, and this is about official canon rules, I will take it upon myself as MoRP to make and manage a new thread for this topic. It will be up shortly.
